Dreamfeeding problem-need some help
« on: November 28, 2006, 16:18:59 pm »
Hi,

I have been able to dreamfeed my 3 week old for about 4 nights and every time he finishes his bottle he wakes up because he has a dirty diaper.  It seems like the dreamfeed makes him go. Once I change the diaper it spoils his sleep and he wont go back down without a fight.
We do bath time at around 8pm and the dreamfeed at about 10-10:30. He doesn't fall back asleep until about 11:30pm and he wakes for a feeding at about 1-1:30am.
Am I doing something wrong???

Thanks
Lori

hi Lori. welcome to BW  :-*

I won't be of much help as DF never worked for my dd when she was your son's age, so a newborn, and we stopped it until she was 5 months or so.

anyway, you're not doing anything wrong!
At 3 weeks babies can still be behaving the same, day and night, and quite difficult to be put back to sleep once awaken. I know my dd was. we would spend from around 1 to 2 hours at night trying to put her back down once she woke up to feed. and poohing after the feed- completely normal at that age, so nothing to worry about.

BUT how do you change her? do you keep lights low and stay quiet so not to overstimulate her?

what time does she wake to feed without DF?

Hi Lori,

I agree with Monika, at 3 weeks babies don't really know the difference between night and day. Heck, they are still getting used to being in the outside world!

I do think an 8pm bathtime is a bit late for a 3 week old. At this age he should be getting his bath at around 7. And in bed by 7:30.

I'm also curious as to how you change his diaper. When  my ds was a newborn I had a nightlight in the bathroom so I would have just barely enough light so as to not fall on my face. I also didn't speak and moved in slooooow mooooooooootion.

Thanks for your responses Beca and Monika.
I do change my lo with a night light on and I try to do things slowly and quietly. I will take your advice and bump up bathtime/bedtime.  Without a dreamfeed he will wake at 12:30 for a feeding.  If I can get a dreamfeed in he will usually sleep until 1:45-2am.
It's nice to know that I'm not doing anything wrong.  What seems to work one night goes terribly wrong the next!!
