Switching to regular cups from sippy cups
« on: November 28, 2006, 19:44:22 pm »
When do you start introducing regular cups as opposed to sippy cups?  My lo is 17 mo and not sure when I should start with the regular cups...

Thanks!

I would love to know as well! Mine uses a straw cup and sometimes when she is playing she pretends to drink from a normal cup but she refuses to do it 'for real'.  Any advice welcome.

Fraser started using a regular cup occassionally around 2 1/2. Before that he had sips from a big cup with help. He'll drink from an open cup with a straw but is often not happy without a lid/spout so I generally let him choose. I think is DD did not have 'baby' cups he would be happier to use 'big' cups.

DS was prompted at 2 YO to try regular cups by the introduction at nursery of a water cooler. All the tots loved the cold water and the plastic  cups so much that they had to move the cooler away from the nursery hallway. The cups are light enough for little hands, perhaps you could start with something similar ?

Lilah is almost 27 months old, and though she can drink from an open cup, most of her drinks are still in a sippy (she doesn't usually take much liquid from an open cup, and she's a "sip through the day" kind of girl, so to get enough fluids in her, we still give her a sippy).  I'm not really sure when or even how we introduced the open cup, though she has always liked to drink from our cups, and the nasty bucket we use in the bath :P .  I offered open cups of water occasionally from about 20 months or so (I'm guessing).  But one day I put an open cup in front of her and she just picked it up and drank from it like a pro.

Sorry, I'm not much help!  Just try it out and see if she takes to it.  If not, don't push it, and try again later.

Liam is 18mo & he has at least 50% of his drinks from an open cup (no spillage), I actually only use a sippy if he is having a big one (like milk) or we are out of the house, all his drinks at meals/snacks are from a normal cup & he can/does drink about 1/2 a cup at a time... he started wanting to do it (copy brother??) so we ran with it. I think Aiden was about 2 when he started having it on a regular basis.
I think both started from having a drink in the bath (not bath water though) & went from there. I did have to change wet clothes for a while, but I was cool with that.

I will say Liam is "abnormaly" good with his hands/physical things ...he has passed most of the physical milestones really early & my health nurse jokes he is "age adjusted to 21mo" as he was born the size of a 3mo & is really really tall (3ft) for his age. So I think he is REALLY early to have mastered that skill, as none of his peers in RL have
