Birthday Cake at First Birthday?
« on: December 02, 2006, 22:44:49 pm »
My child still has a few months to go...as she is 8 months now. But we were talking about her first birthday last night and wondering...how smart is giving her cake?

You always see the cute photos of kids covered in mess...but all the sugar and so on.

Thoughts please...

Dh actually made a chocolate cake with chocolate icing in the shape of a giant "1" and put it down on Noah's highchair tray for him to dive into! :o  He made a mess of it and had a few small bites before we took it away to eat the rest ourselves. ;D  Of course, we had to take a few pictures before we took it away! ;)  I personally think it's fine for that special day depending on your lo's diet at that point.  My son had no allergies so we didn't have to worry about milk, eggs, chocolate, etc and as for the sugar, I suspect most of the time, they get more on their faces then in their tummy's so it's no biggy. ;D

My dd just had her first birthday party, I cut her a piece of cake, about 1x1 inch square and gave it to her to eat. I never give her sugar or salt (I make all her food) but I made an exception for this special day, she totally loved it.

I found that my DD didn't really know what to do with it and actually had more fun smooshing the cake all around and the frosting in her fingers.  She did taste it but wasn't too keen on it.  I think that you can have the photo opportunity and offer a little bit, but I would be careful about letting your LO eat too much.

We tried egg and milk at about 11.5 months, so were ok with no allergies. Then a very simple cake with flour, eggs, butter, and sugar; and a butter and sugar frosting, decorated with gerber prunes! I was a little worried about the sugar, but like Casey's DD, DS was more overwhelmed with all the people, the cheers, etc., and just picked the gerber puffs off the top (a good tip if you just want the photo opp, and to whisk the cake away afterwards). When he did taste the cake, he didn't like it at all!  ::)

absolutely!  make a healthier cake if you're concerned about sugar, they won't really care but it's nice.
go for it!

Both of mine really only smooshed the  cake around and hardly ate any.  I think it is cute for a photo op so went ahead and did it. ;D

Don't worry about the suger. very little actually makes it IN the child. We made chocolate cake with chocolate iceing, she was fine with it. But frankly she wore more then she ate. Besides suger itself isn't bad for your child, not in moderation. If your LO has cake she'll be fine.

my LO just had her 1st birthday on sept 28th and we bought a little cup cake for her to have, it was carrot cake as i thought this would be heathier.
She only nibbled at it once she had finished re-decorating our living room with it.. ;D

Funny you asked this question as I was just thinking about it.
Tatum turns 1 on DEC.12 and I was undecided about the cake. I think that I am going to make her a cake and just let her have at it!!! ;D

if you go to wholesomebabyfood.com, there is a recipe for a baby b=day cake.  i think they have one without sugar.  i want the photo op also but was also concerned about sugar intake because goodness knows LO is spirited enough without any help.

Peppa Pig - keira and i have the same b-day.  i was 31 on her 1st b-day.  that's kind of cool.

kim - are you so excited and sad?  it's coming up.

We let our lo have some of her b'day cake. I took the icing away thou but otherwise, she just played with it more than eat it. Smudged it all over her dress too. ;D

that sounds good stacy.  had you introduced cream cheese to him before the cake?

where did you get the recipe?
