Tv + Dinner???
« on: December 03, 2006, 02:11:46 am »
Not sure if this belongs in this section...feel free to relocate if need be...
I'm having a slight conflict with my husband about tv and dinner(or lunch or breakfast for that matter).
I guess what made this issue re-surface is the fact that I am reading Tracys book for Toddlers...and while I less than half way through, I've obviously noticed how example is what helps to shape our Lo's. While Tv isn't a bad thing in itself..I worry that having it on while eating every meal(when he's not at daycare) is going to become a habit...and may become a bad habit...does that make sense??
My DH says there is nothing wrong with it, and "if you don't want to watch Tv while you feed him, don't--if I am, I will(have it on)".
Keeping in mind we live in an apartment...and the lay out is one where the tv can be heard throughout....especially in Any thoughts would be appreciated...maybe Im making something out of nothing..

I agree with you. I like to have the TV off during meal times. For me, meal time is supposed to be a time to enjoy each other's company and talk as a family. Do you find that it is distracting to your DS when it's on? If it is distracting, that could be something you could point out to your DH as an argument against having the TV on. It sounds like your DH has it on while he's feeding your DS and you have it off....what do you do if you're eating as a family? It sounds like your DH is really unwilling to budge on the TV thing, but maybe you could compromise and have a no TV rule during family meals. Sorry I'm not much help! Let us know how it goes.  :)

When ds was little and fed in his bouncy chair I would have had the TV on as background noise.  Big mistake, especially when ds started to pay attention.  It was only when I started using his highchair and eating meals in the kitchen away from it that I realise what a distraction it was for him, and how much of a battle mealtimes were becoming because of it.  The TV will still be on in the living room so I can hear the news and such like but ds's concentration is so much better at mealtimes away from the bright colours and pictures on the screen.
