Despairing, dissallusioned and distraught
« on: December 04, 2006, 18:19:39 pm »
:'( My 16 mo son has progressed from: great to bottle feed.... great to spoon feed with any mushed food.... to the pickiest independant eater.  Today he ate:

8oz milk at 7:00 am
1/4 of a Bagel with marmite on at breakfast, none of the cereal on offer.
None of the fruit and juice at mid-morning snack time
None of the toast, fruit, cheese, raisins, biscuits at lunch time
None of the toast, pie, pasta, tomato, yoghurt at tea time
Half a digestive biscuit
4oz milk before bed

This isn't unnusual for the past month.  Most days he'll eat yoghurt, but not always.

He insists on feeding himself.

I'm not worried that he'll starve; clearly he's doing okay (goodness knows how), and I figure that he will eat when he's hungry.  But.......... it's so de-motivating.  He has fearful tantrums if I try to help him with the spoon, or when it's just not what he's wanting.

Any supportive suggestions please?? ???
Thank you.

I take it you've ruled out illness?  It's so frustrating. I hate when I've spent the best part of an afternoon cooking only for my 3yo to turn his nose up at it!  The other 2 (17 months) aren't bad at all, but I know I'm gonna get it with them soon enough.

Just keep offering foods and it will pass.

Do you think your lo may be teething?

Whem my DS was cutting his molars and Eye teeth, he refused to eat much of anything.

Hope things improve, please let us know how you are getting on.

At the same age, my DS behaved in the same way, looking terrified if you brought a spoon near him. Then after a few days of this, he grabbed the spoon from my DH's hand, and started shovelling the food into his own mouth! Try giving him the spoon and some food he never refuses, and see if he just wants to give it a go himself.

As pp said, it could be teething, just spoon refusal, one of a number of things, but something that mot of us have been through at one time or another. There is a suppost thread set up, I don't know if you've seen it https://babywhispererforums.com/index.php?topic=71906.0. You may want to have a look in there as well.
