5.5 mo LO not playing with his feet
« on: December 07, 2006, 08:40:19 am »
I was wondering at what age are LO-s meant to start finding their feet? My DS is 5.5 mo and is still not playing with his. I'm a bit worried thinking perhaps there is something wrong... May be there are games/exercise that can encourange him? Any advice would be much appreciated!

Olivia, babies are not really 'meant' to start doing things in certain age. all babies are different :)

give him more time, he will start 'eating' ;) his feet sooner or later.

is it the only thing you're worrying about? if so, lucky you! ;)  :-*

I agree with Majas_mum. This is what you can do with your LO as an activity. Whenever you change your LO's diaper, let your LO to hold his feet. This will make it easier for you to change the diapers + help him to stretch ;D

Thanks for that. Litomi, I've been trying the nappy change thing that you've recommended but LO just wouldn't hold his feet, even for a few seconds. Will keep trying anyway. It' s not a major concern and, yes, I know all babies develop differently, but I thought I'd ask the question.
Many thanks
Olivia

Olivia- My son has never played with his feet much.  He is 9.5 months old.  On occasion on the changing table he will grab them, but he just isn't that interested.  He likes to pull off his socks, but, again, that is only on occasion.  I guess all babies are different.  Some love their feet and others don't.   ;D

My DD hasn't started playing with her feet yet but our developmental specialist suggested an exercise because she was locking her knees a lot.  We call it "Toes on Nose"  We hold her feet and touch them to her nose and then put them in her mouth.  When we put her foot in her mouth we call it "the politician" - you can use the name your particular favorite.  I won't tell who we use.  She really likes it and we were told that she will eventually start to do this herself.  You may want to try this exercise.

That's great, catmom! Will give it a go. He has actually just started to hold his left foot for a few seconds while laying on the change table or sitting in his car seat - we noticed it a few days ago. So hopefully it's a bit of a progress. I like the "politician" game though!

rosie never played with her feet unless you  did "toes on nose" which she still finds really funny, but she still isn't fussed about playing with her own feet.  sometimes in the car seat she'll pull her socks off, but she's not bothered after she does that.

she was crawling hands and knees at 7 months, and didn't actually learn to sit until after that - we say she learnt to sit down rather than sit up! and she's walking since xmas day - so at 12 1/2 months.

My 6mo DS is not interested in his feet either. But he seems very interested when I put very bright  and colourfull socks on. He does anything to catch those then. But I'm not really worried.

My DD didn't do this until recently ( 6mo+ ) I did worry about it a bit too - come on, it's classic baby pose !!! - but i don't think it's a developmental milestone or anything. I know you can get socks with bugs, rattles etc but these didn't seem to interest her. About the time she started doing it she did seem fascinated by her feet -maybe it's a bodily awareness thing? Maybe games with feet (eg round and round the garden) or massage would help. Worth trying if it help you feel better ! xx

My DD didn't really get into her feet until...well, quite recently, like the last month or two - and she's now 15MO.
