Burping thoughts?
« on: December 07, 2006, 23:07:51 pm »
Hi all,

A quick (or not so quick) question:
Is there any particular way to burp that works better than any other?

I have an lo who we're pretty sure has reflux, though she's generally fine once all the burps are out.  But there's the catch.  Neither my dh nor I can seem to get her burps out and try as she might to get to sleep, it keeps waking her up.  By three in the afternoon she's completely exhausted and worn out.

I bf, burp her several times sitting up during her feed, and afterwards burp her over my shoulder.

thanks!

Tiara and baby Liv.

how old is your LO?  I know with my son it was horrible getting him to burp and still on occation it wakes him.  it will get better with time.  My son has reflux as well and what has really helped him was to stand up and bounce up and down as I pat to burp him so the milk will settle and the air comes out.  also it helps with the reflux because it helps the digestion process.   Rubbing made his reflux worse so we stopped doing that.  I think it is just trial and error.  I looked at reflux web sites for some suggestions also.  you might want to check some of those out.
I know tracy suggests putting their arms over your shoulder and rubbing up and down on the left side of the back.  the arm thing helps sometimes but not always for us.  but it is worth a try.

hi, my lo has reflux as well and ive found that having her rested over my shoulder and patting her bum seems to bring her wind up. we also use infacol which helps get the wind up and disperse the gas in her tummy. keeping her upright for half an hour after a feed helps her not to spit up anywhere as much as she used to.

sometimes just changing the babies position several times works.  It has worked really well for my lo.  Usually I I will lay her on her back for a few seconds, then upon my shoulder, then maybe on her left side and back on my shoulder.  This usually gets the job done.

I know people who felt gas drops like infacol really helped things so it might be worth a try.
We also changed positions a lot.
It's also true that gas can be made much worse depending on your feeding latch and position so it might be worth getting someone to just check that's the best it can be. I am speaking from experience on this one because I was using a breastfeeding pillow and sometimes Sam's legs were slightly higher than his head (doh!) and once someone had pointed that out to me and I had raised his upper half gas really lessened. A latch which isn't quite air-tight e.g. you hear clicking noises or the cheeks are sucked in would also contribute to gas (as well as potentially bring other problems).
