need snack ideas for 14 mo. old
« on: December 08, 2006, 00:49:39 am »
Now that my LO's appetite has really picked up, I'm having to take snacks more seriously.  I'm getting tired of the usual cheerios/rice cakes/Veggie Booty along with some milk and/or water.  I know he needs more variety, but I'm a little stumped.  Unfortunately, he refuses to try fresh fruit, which I've offered on many occasions but as soon as he puts a piece in his mouth he immediately takes it out.

I also sometimes offer him cheese, yogurt or avocado, to get some fat and calories in the snack.  And his love affair with veggies seems to be waning, as he wasn't interested in the peas and green beans I've offered him in the past few days.

Any other suggestions?

TIA!

Hello, I have an 14 month old too, here are some ideas.

Breadsticks, Bagel Chips, Babybel cheese, mini bananas, pudding (a little sweet, but it helps get the dairy in), a peeled tangerine orange, melba toast with toppings like tzaziki, hummus, baba ganoush, nut spreads, mini muffins, mini bagels, rice pudding cup.

These are naming most of the ones I do. Hope this helps a bit!

Since we went to one nap, we just have an afternoon snack mostly. We do:

Wheat thins, on their own or with cream cheese
Graham crackers, something along those lines
Fruit, fresh or dried
Veggies
Pasta pieces
Hummus and pita bread

Anything really!

He sometimes likes straws so we are trying smoothies as well

I know a lot of adults don't like this food, but my lo likes cottage cheese.  I was desperate one day and gave her some.  She ate it, but had a funny face. Happened two more times, now she loves it and carries the clean empty container all over the house.

Is the fruit cold?  I sometimes serve it warm because I have been buying frozen fruit and it goes down well.

My lo is probably addictive to sugary fruit, but she loves mangos.

I can't serve peanut butter yet due to food allergies, but what about sunflower butter?  It is a close taste to peanut butter.  I have not tried it yet, but I do know you need to spread it really thin because otherwise it is a choking hazard.

three things that DS hoovers down lately are:

1. crumbled arrowroot cookies with small pieces of raisin/cranberries and small pieces of babybel cheese. i normally smoosh the bits into dime sized balls and he picks them up. it's funny -- he'll completely stay away from the bits and pieces and patiently wait for the balls to be ready  ;D

2. small pieces of avocado on small pieces of ritz crackers

3. small pieces of laughing cow cream cheese sandwiched between two rice chex

love all the other ideas!

My DS loves organic fruit bars, cream cheese on toast, organic baby crisps, baby biscuits, jar of fuit puree, yogurt, apple, grapes, strawberries, pasta - he will basically eat anything that is put in front of him, but does love his fruit.

Thanks - these are great suggestions!  I think including some kind of protein/dairy in the snack seems to be working well for us.
