Acid Reflux
« on: December 08, 2006, 05:22:37 am »
HI I did post on the naps forum bc we need help with longer naps.  However I wonder what I should do with my son who has reflux.  Is it okay to put him on easy?? I'm sure having some sort of routine is best.  It's just getting him on one that's tricky? He is on meds which seem to help.  He is 15 weeks now so I thought I should work on the 4 hour easy?  Any suggestions?

Important things to know- He's breastfed and hates formula.

hi and welcome.

first of all- it's beneficial for any and every baby to be on a good routine. babies like routines as they organize their days, help them 'know' what comes next etc. so don't hesitate and keep on trying! :)

if he's 15 weeks, he may or may not be ready for 4hrs easy. it all depends on how often he needs to eat and how long can he handle between naps. but if you say you need his naps to be longer, he's probably ready for longer activity times.

could you post how your day looks now? how is he sleeping at night?

hope to hear from you soon :)

I failed utterly with the routine when the reflux was at its worst. Have you got it under control?

What are you doing to keep his reflux in control? Is he taking meds? Is his crib elevated?

My lo has acid reflux.  When it was really bad we had a mattress wedge in her crib and made sure to keep her upright for at least 30 minutes to an hour after she ate except right before bed time.  She is also on meds but was on special spit up formula that really helped.  We didn't have a problem getting her on EASY so I can't help there much, but I do know that routine is so very important.  I hope it gets better for you and your lo.

If his pain is being controlled with meds and other measures (elevating mattress, keeping him upright after feeds, etc), there shouldn't be any reason you can't put him on EASY. :)

We trying the 3 hr easy however I think since next week he'll be 4 months I should just try the 4 hr easy.  He doesn't sleep so well at night.  Sometimes he'll sleep 5 hrs for me than it's 3hr and up again for a feed than maybe another 3 or 2 hr. He seems to only nap about 45 minutes during the day most afternoons I can get him to take a 2 hr nap.

my baby also has problems with reflux and is on meds as well.  i promise easy will help!  he does so great on a routine because we don't worry about over-feeding him and possibly causing the reflux to worsen. we know just how much he needs and just how often he needs it, however we are still working on deciding if we have him on the correct amount of time between meals.  he's only 11 wks and he is on 4 hour easy, which i know seems young to go so long between meals, but he sort of put himself on that routine. when he was eating every 3 and 3.5 hours, he didn't seem hungry and would just look around and want to play!  when we moved to every 4 hours, he ate better.  as a word of warning though, we're still having problems with night waking and we're trying to determine if he is indeed eating frequently enough during the day and how we might can transition to longer periods of sleep at night.  an easy routine definately requires thought and lots of support from other parents, but it's worth it, especially with babies who have difficulties like reflux.  good luck to you and your little one!
