How often??
« on: December 10, 2006, 10:21:27 am »
Just wondering how much milk a 13 month old needs???  Right now DD is taking 3-8oz bottles.  This brings me to my second question, how do I get DD to take her milk from a sippy cup instead of a bottle (my doctor says she should no longer have a bottle).  She knows how to drink from a sippy cup (has been doing it since she was 6 months (taking water), but if I put milk in it, she'll only take 1-2 oz.  I've tried using a different sippy cup for water and milk, and also have tried putting the sippy cup spout on her bottle (the avent bottles), but the same thing happens.  She drinks an ounce or two, then will put the milk in her mouth and then let it dribble out of her mouth (she does this with water too).  Any suggestions??  Thanks!!

16-24 oz per day of dairy is the general guideline. Tyler didn't drink milk consistently from a sippy until we ditched bottles completely. We dropped them gradually and gave him plenty of other dairy to make up for the lost ounces while he was still in between, and we'd have the sippy available throughout the day for him to, well, sip from. Once the last bottle was gone, his milk intake from the sippy went up big time, but he's never sat down to drink 8 oz at a time. Try not to think of the sippy as a bottle...babies gulp down 8 oz bottles because that's their meal, or at least a supplement to it. Adults drink when they're thirsty, which is usually a few ounces at a time. Part of transitioning to a sippy is to teach your toddler to drink when she's thirsty like we do, so what she's doing is normal!
