Deb- I have to admit that I did not do the sippy today.  Brendan had a hard time going down for his morning nap and then lunch was a disaster because he was trying to poop (he has consitpation problems) and once that was done he only wanted Cheerios.  So I just kinda pushed it aside.  I am planning on offering the sippy tomorrow after breakfast.  I only have one of the cups that he is liking at the moment so I am going to be washing it a hundred times a day.   :P

BTW...how was Noah's party?  Did he love it or did he cry?

Good News, Elisabeth is taking a sippy, she only has her morning bottle now of formula.  The only sippy she will use is the straw sippy and she will only drink milk out of it.  good enough for me.
Good luck everyone :)

Today is a good day!  Brendan took a sippy today also.  At breakfast he took about 2.5oz while I was holding him (plus another 2oz in the bottle).  At lunch hubby laid him on the ground and gave him the sippy and he fed himself 4oz (plus another 2oz in the bottle).  We are going to try for three and offer the bedtime bottle in a sippy too.  I don't think he is really attached to the bottle and will not mind it being a sippy instead.  I am very happy!

Thats great Kimberley and Stephanie,
don't be surprised if they just right out refuse the milk/sippy another day. Noah did this every once and a while and I didn't worry about it and just gave him the bottle. but now that he is 1, no more bottle---except for bedtime. I guess for me, I just want to make sure that he is nice and full for the night and thus I have kept the bottle at bedtime because he will usually take 7-8oz, which I don't think he will do from a sippy.

Kimberley-how did the sippy at bedtime go?

Noah's birthday was great,  I'll have to post a pic or two, as I am particularily proud of the cake, and my little man eating it. :)
we had about 25 people here and he did fine. he was tired though. we of course had a early wake that day and thus naps were off and he ended up being awake from 1:45-6:45, which is a bit long for him. we are in the process of shortening the am nap to 30min, as he was right out refusing the pm nap. so lots of fun changes at this age.

talk to you later,
Deborah,

Deb- The bedtime bottle/sippy went very well.  I put him on the ground and then gave him the sippy cup.  At first he wanted me to hold it for him but I just put his hands on it and he held it.  He drank for a while then took it out and played with it, then drank some more.  He ate 5oz on his own.  I put the rest in a bottle but he only ate about 1/2oz more.  I think that he is pretty much done once he finishes himself.

I am so glad that he is doing it himself, but what do I do when we are out and about?  I can't let him lie down in the middle of the mall or wherever just so he can have his sippy.  Should I just hold him in my lap and give it to him that way or should I just do a bottle until he learns a better way to feed himself?  I am going out tomorrow so I kinda have to figure this out pretty quickly.   :-\

kim,
personally, I would probably let him sit in your lap and drink it that way, but bring the bottle just in case.
Glad to hear the bedtime sippy went well.  You have inspired me to maybe do it that way.  I guess I would probably put Noah in the highchair for that. My other option would be to give him his milk with his supper at 5:15 and then just do a top up at 6:30pm, definately something tp think about....
what kind of sippy cup are you using?

Right now we are using a Playtex sippy.  I am still planning on trying some different kinds to see if there are ones that he likes better.

This morning he only ate about 3oz from the sippy...he didn't eat much at breakfast either so I am not sure what is up.

I like the idea of offering it at meals and then a little bit later, hopefully that will get him moving in the right direction.

Thanks for all the help.  You have  helped make the transition so much easier than I thought it would be.

So he ate okay at our outing today.  I think it may partly be just an off eating day.  Some days he eats and drinks like crazy and other days he eats and drinks almost nothing- I think today is one of those days.  He wanted me to hold the sippy (he was on my lap) and then he only ate about 3.5oz.  I let him hold it but he just played with it.  He tried to drink from it a couple of times but he was sitting straight up and all he got was air.  I went to Wal-Mart and bought one of every kind of sippy cup with straw to try out.  Hopefully those will allow him to sit upright and drink like he wants to.  Hubby was not to thrilled but I want to find something he likes.   :-\

just bought Noah a new platex straw sippy--insulator sport. seems to be good as the the straw is soft and it reaches to the bottom. I bought it from Safeway, so I'm worse then you---at least you shopped at Walmart  ;)

Hi, great thread. Just what I need at the moment. Quick question......I am going to try and wean him off the midday bottle. Should I offer formulae in his sippy cup or go the full hog and give him full fat milk? I have offered him f.f milk in sippy over the last meals, and he isnt hugely interested in it....thanks.

Maybe you could try some half-n-half?  Half formula and half milk.  That might help his transition to milk.

We tried loads & loads of different cups (costly a fortune)!

Then I prchased a sippy with a straw from pound land and she loves it, it has a bicycle clip which she uses as a handle!! (bless)

Hi,
I'm still trying to get my DS to drink from a sippy cup.  I'm just curious....on average how many different sippy cups have you bought?  I've already bought 3 so far and I'm probably going to have to buy something else as DS doesn't like the ones I've bought so far.  I can't believe the amount of money I'm probably going to spend on cups  :P
