Hi Arial, you have had some excellent advice from everyone.

I just wanted to add , that I have noticed, with my DD, if she is overtired at bedtime we suffer from early wake ups.  For example : 2 nights ago she was not in bed until after 7pm, which is very late for her. She then woke through the night and was awake for the day at 5am  ::)  So last night she was in bed by 6pm and we had a 6am wake up this morning.

Not sure if that helps but it may be worth looking out for. I am by no means an expert as we are still having terrible night wakings but I at least know why she is waking early. One thing at a time lol

Good Luck

Maisy thanks for the info.  I know that all of the problems are still related from him being overtired, but we are definitely trying our best.  I think that if Joshua was able to sleep the full 1 1/2 hours for each of his naps, he would go to bed less tired.

I know what you mean, Kirsten has only just started to sleep 1.5 hours for her first nap and usually has 2 short afternoon naps as she will not have another long sleep. I can cope with this as I hae a son at school so afternoons are busy with the school run etc.

I know our probs come from too short A time, but when I tried to lengthen it she went to 30 min naps  ::) so I am gradually doing it by around 5 mins every couple of days.

good luck

Well, my mom tried to put him to sleep at around 8:30AM, so I think that his first A time was between 2.5 to 2.75 hours.  He slept almost two hours.  For his second nap, they gave him a A time of 3 hours, but he only slept 20 minutes.  Everyone in my family tried to make him sleep after that, but he would not sleep.  I just tried to have him take another short nap, he would closed his eyes, but never fell asleep.  Now, I am thinking I got to start bedtime routine again at 530PM.  This has really been hard on him!

Arial,
his first nap sounds very successful...2hrs...that is great.

you pushed for 3hrs second time around and he slept for 20mins....that is an overtired nap!  now you have witnessed it.

you are doing very good.  i know it is hard on him.  but you'll get it...and then lo will sleep perfectly.  it really is alot of trial and error.

keep at er,
sami

The hard thing is that I am not here and is other people putting him to sleep.  Sometimes, I am not sure that my family is looking at his cues.  Although, if I were to follow his cues, I sometimes would have to put him in bed at least 1 hour before his second nap.  Like you say, it is trial and error.  The day before, when we put him for his second nap, also after having a 3 hour A time, he was able to sleep 1 hour.  Well, we will keep trying.

Well, the schedule has been rough for my LO.  He has had a lot of excitement lately with my brother and sister being here for the holidays.  He gets overstimulated and then overtired.  I am trying my hardest to minimize overstimulation.  I am in the learning process as well -  I did not realize that he would be overwhelmed when we showed him all his presents, now we know not to let him play with all of them at once.

Anyway, his sleep has been horrible because of being overtired.  I have been having to put him to bed ealier than usual.  Last night, I put him to bed 15 min earlier and he did better.  Now we are starting bedtime routine at 515 and is already in bed before 6PM.  Routine remains the same during the daytime (the routine that I follow is noted in entry dated Dec. 18). Last night he slept better, but still waking up twice at night, crying and trying to get back to sleep himself, when before, he would do it without crying.  I am also noticing that he has early wakings.  In past few days, he woke up at 4Am and played on his own until fall asleep at 6AM (his waking time).  When he falls asleep then, I let him sleep until 630Am and then waking up.  Am I doing right by letting him sleep at this time or should I waking up at 6AM?  I only let him sleep at 6AM when he has had a poor night with multiple wakings.

Thanks for the suggestions

I have the same problem (LO waking hourly) but he is 8 weeks and has NO pattern at all.  In addition the only time he sleeps more than 20 mins is if he's sleeping on his mom or dad.

oh, bless your heart.  My wakes up 3-4 times at night if he is overtired, if not, he can sleep from 630PM to 4 or 5AM without much noise from him.

How can we help you with your LO?
