Why is he doing this now??
« on: December 14, 2006, 17:28:56 pm »
My almost 18 month old lo has been really good to go down for naps and bedtimes.  Would do our winddown and routine and would never fuss when we put him down.

Since Sunday evening it has been horrible.  It took 2hrs to settle him to bed.  Then dh and I decided to go back to wi/wo.  Monday nap time took an hour.  Mon bedtime took 1 minute.  Tues nap took 30sec Tues bedtime took 1minute.  Today nap took 5 sec.

He cries before you put him in his crib and continues to cry until you leave the room and then once your out he stops.  He may whimper but I haven't had to wi (I usually give him 2 min and then go).

Why has he started this now?  It is almost like he hates his bed but when we leave he goes to sleep.  Sun night he was thrown off routine a bit (went to MIL for dinner) but he has been off it before and used to be okay?

Is it separation??
I hate seeing him cry but once I leave he stops.  Weird or not??

Hi Sabine,

Sounds like he might be overtired. That has happened to my LO. The moment I would put her down in her crib she would cry. It was out of character for her. She doesn't usually do that. So, I sat with her in my rocking chair to calm her down for about 10min, then I would put her back in her crib, rub her forehead and tell her it was doh doh time (french for bed time). Then she would smile and eventually fall asleep. I would hear her mantra cry on the monitor.

I hope that helps

My ds does this on occassion, too.  It's usually when he's overtired.  He does the same as your lo--stops crying as soon as I leave the room, and then falls asleep very quickly after that.  I think it's pretty normal.  I don't like the crying either, but I know if I were to stay in the room it would get much worse.  It's almost like he's crying for some peace and quiet--"please go away so I can sleep, mommy!"

The weird thing is though there has been no change to his routine and he just started doing this 3 days ago.  His routine has been the same for the last month.

He goes to bed 730 and it usually takes him 10-20 min to actually fall asleep then he wakes up b/w 620-640am and has a 2-2.5 hour nap during the day.  So he is getting 10.5 hrs at night and 2-2.5 during the day and he isn't cranky at all.

Do you really think he is overtired??  I thought maybe a phase of separation.
If overtired should I be putting him to bed earlier.  I have tried this and the same thing happens.

If you miss his cue than it can be overtiredness. It can and will happen from time to time. Sometimes, we don't catch that they are tired.

My DD sleeps about 3hrs in the day and about 10hrs at night. Maybe your LO isn't sleeping enough during the day...

I would try to extend those naps. Each should be about 1-2hrs max per nap.

Come to think of it, we did have a short phase of this where it seemed Dave just wanted me to stay in the room and play.  :-\   Maybe it is a separation thing.  Hope it doesn't last long, Sabine.  :)

We went through a stage like that & what worked great for us was more stories as part of our wind-down, one day I just kept letting him pick more stories until he decided he had had enough & since that day he has anywhere from 30sec of stories to 10mins & we know when he is done when he pushes the books away & wants his bear & goes to bed willingly now

Just an update...we were persistent with WI/WO and looks like it was just a phase.  Only took 5 days and now no probs with naps and bedtime.

Thanks mommies!!
