I stopped BF for 2 weeks-Do I still have a chance????
« on: December 16, 2006, 14:38:54 pm »
Hi,

I stopped BF for 2 weeks and put my lo on formula. I received some misinformation from a family member and made a quick, yet stupid mistake.  I noticed that I still have some milk.  I have been trying to pump and I only get 1/2oz at a time.  I know I cannot BF completely but I wanted to give my lo breast milk whenever possible and formula.

Do I still have a chance??  And is there anything I can do to increase my milk supply???

Hi

Someone else had a similar question last week.  I'm not a bf "expert" like some of the other girls but I'll post a link to the other thread & it might be helpful.

Hope it helps you because I stopped bf for the same reason you did & I completely regretted it.

Hello -

I think you can still breastfeed. Check out this site:
http://http://www.drjacknewman.com/index.php?option=com_content&task=view&id=77&Itemid=105

Dr. Jack Newman also has a wonderful book that lists ways of increasing your milk supply. Get on the phone with your local La Leche League leader. Baby waking; sorry.

Be persistent! Best wishes,
Mellissa

Hi.  Same thing happened to me with my 1st daughter.  I stopped for about 3 and a half week and after that I could breastfeed her again (combined with formula) for about 7 months.  I had a very hard time at the begining but I could do it in spite of he doctor who said I wouldn't.

Yes, you definitely can! It will be some take dedication and support from your family, but I have heard of women relactating weeks later, so 2 weeks later should be very "doable". Make sure you are dedicated, have good support, and a good pump. Here's some other links.

Just an update,

I rented an Ameda double breast pump and my supply is still coming back slowly.  I try to pump at least 8 times a day.  Whatever milk I have pumped I give to my lo.  My supply is still no where near what it was in the beginning.  I have tried putting my lo on my breast but he gets very upset because the flow is no where near the bottle.  He has a big appetite!!

Is there anything else I can do to get my supply flowing? Someone mentioned that my doctor could prescribe something....is that true??

Are you in the US? You can have your doctor prescribe domperidone (motillium), I have gotten it through the mail without presciption. I can give you the details if you want.

How old is your lo? You may want to nurse when he is sleepy, he may be more willing to accept the breast then. Do you have access to a lactation consultant? Or you can try to find a La Leche League, they will be a great support to you, and there is also tons of info on their website about relactation, laleche league.org.

Hi Binxyboo,

I'm in Canada.  I have an appointment with my doctor in the new year and I will ask him about that medication.  I tried nursing my lo last night when he was really sleepy and he nursed for about 5 minutes and then stopped.
I have called my la leche rep and she offered very little help.

I'll keep you posted as to what my doctor says.
Thanks

I am also very shocked as I have heard such great things about them.  I had more luck with my local public nurse.

You can always try herbal products such as fenugreek...I don't know the exact dose, but it does work (at least it did for me)! Keep it up! Good Luck!

Fenugreek combined with Blessed Thistle is a common combination, Mother's Milk Tea, nursing on demand~throw your routine out the window if you can get your lo to take the breast, maybe nurse together in a bath if you feel comfortable with that, if might be relaxing and comforting to your lo....
