ok - so things aren't going well today...
Just when I thought we were on to something...

He wouldnt' nap - I kept him in there for 40 minutes - but he was just playing...
So, up we got...
I had an appointment that ran late - grrrrrr >:( (was only supposed to be an 30/45min which would have given me plenty of time to get home for early lunch and nap at 11:45, but didn't get home until close to 12
So I quickly gave lunch and he was in crib by 12:30 - asleep 12:40
I'm so mad - at myself and the appointment for running late - it's thrown everything off...

He's clearly overtired by now...and this will mean a crappy nap :(
Tell me it's going to be ok...we were doing so well - I just hope this doesn't mess things up...

It does seem that when Riyan has a good night sleep - like more than 10 hrs and wakes up past 6/6:30 he will not take the catnap (this has happened a couple of times before - he might if it were later in the morning - but then that would mess up the pm nap making it later) and can go 5hrs at least...
I could try 15/20 min at 10 or so if this happens again and then main nap 2.5hrs later?  Will keep that in mind for next time if ther is one ::)

But for now my concern is how long will this nap be :-\

Thanks for letting me talk things through here...

So he napped 1:35 minutes - woke @ 2:15
Didn't wake up in too much of a bad mood though...

Yeah u r right - don't panic - it's hard to do!

Ok, so right - in crib 6:30? and keep in bed in the morning til 7 right, regardless of wake-up?

btw, i'm not sure I understood the limit thing?
thanks a bunch

Deb:  how are things for you?

We had a nw from 4.45-6ish  ::) I do think he woke himself up coughing though. It was after just 9.25 hours sleep. We then had to wake him at 7.30.

Had 20mins at 10 and then 2.25 hours and woke him up at 3. Bed 7.30-out like a light! Fingers crossed.

Zaibun: glad you had a good night!  :)

we had a 5am wake yesterday, but then a 40min am nap and 2hr pm nap, in bed by 7pm, and awoke this am at 6:20am.   We are sticking with 40min am nap and longer pm nap and just seeing how it goes. trying to find the ideal amount of A time btwn the shorter am and longer pm nap.I'll keep you posted.

40min am nap this morning---and he awoke so happy and shouting out saying hello, no crying---so nice.

Yay Cath and Deborah  :D

Zaibun - I was thinking of you today and meant to say that if Riyan has a night when he sleeps longer than usual you may find the next day that his daytime sleep needs are reduced and if he has as much as he has been you may be back to the early wakings because he's had his sleep quota.  I agree with Stacy's approach to give him a certain amount of time to take his catnap (personally I'd give him the 30 minutes you intend for him to nap and get him up at the end of that time whether he's had 30 minutes, 10 minutes or none at all but that's up to you) and then adjust the time of the next nap accordingly.  I don't think 1 hr 35 was too shabby at all!  Remind me how old Riyan is?  How did bedtime go?

Riyan, ditto what Kelly said.   More night sleep= less daytime sleep here as well.

seems to be even MORE prevelant now that we are solidly on 1 nap.

Sounds like everyone is rounding the corner.

Doncha just hate it when you are working so hard on them sleeping and then you go and mess it up?  that just bugs.  lol

Kelly,
Riyan is 16 months (well he will be on the 19th)..
Bedtime went well - he was in his crib at 6:30 - and sounded like he drifted of about 6:50 or so..
I'm hoping that he'l have a good night - I can't imagine him waking at 5ish and then having to stay in his crib til 7! poor little guy..

Ok - I get the limit thing now so I'll do that - maybe I should have put him down for his catnap a little later than 9:30?  I should stick to that time though, as when he wakes early that's the time he goes down..

Yeah Meg - i was so frustrated that I'ld buggered it up - we'ld been doing well and going on the right track..
oh well, let's see what tomorrow brings and we'll go from there..
That's the problem with Riyan - he will sleep less the next day, but doesn't seem to tack on any lost sleep at night!

Glad others are getting some sleep also and things are progressing

Cheers,
Zaibun

Zaibun - Riyan's the same age as Zander then and I'm having to reduce his 2 hour nap to 1 hr 30/45 to keep his 12 hours at night, so if Riyan has a good night I wouldn't be worried about a 1.5 hour one nap the following day so long as he isn't overtired by bedtime.  I would stick with 9.30 for the catnap but if he doesn't need it (ie he's still awake at 10) aim for a 12/12.30 one nap day.

Good luck tonight!

Kelly,
The thing is that Riyan has never slept more than 12/12.5 total for the day including nights.(maybe a few times but not many)..it might be that this is all he needs, but not I lol!
I wish I could get another hour out of him..

So he slept till just past 5, so another 10hr night or so..at about 6:15 or so he went quiet and it seemed like he was dozing, but only for about 10minutes  or so...at 6:45 he started calling for me, so we just got him out..
Now - as he's been up since 5ish or so - I'll still keep 9:30 if he can last that long, (maybe a tad earlier if not)
and hope to return to schedule so we can get to a 7:30 bedtime..

He's like Kaleb - can go a little longer on short catnaps than most...so if he does 9:30-10, then nap at 1:30
If he doesn't nap then what time should nap be cosidering his early wake? Maybe 11:30 at the latest?

Thanks guys - it really helps having you along for the ride!

The fact that he stayed in his cot until almost wake-up time means he'll be fairly rested despite the early start and it's really positive that he's happy to do that!  Well done for sticking with it, you're reinforcing it's not time to wake up yet which is great  :D

Personally I wouldn't do the nap any earlier than 12 because if he doesn't sleep a really long time you're going to have a long afternoon ahead of you and may have to do another early bedtime which seems to always mean an early morning for Riyan.  See how he goes though, maybe he'll take the catnap so it won't even be an issue!

It's hard leaving him in there for so long believe me - I feel so bad for him - but as long as he's not crying or anything I'm going to stick with it - He's got to get the message eventually right? ::)

ok - he's finally asleep at 9:35 - I had put him down at 9:20 - he was hysterical as I did this- he's never like that at morning naptime even refused his cup of milk which he also never does - he must have been really, really tired . I had to go in and settle him down by first rubbing his back - but still wouldn't calm down so I held him and swayed and he fell asleep..I haven't had to do that very often, and I don't intend to continue if I can help it, but he needed to sleep and he was crying so hard :-[

Yeah - I agree with you about the 12 naptime - if he hadn't slept right now - I would have done that and prayed...

I'm sure he'll get the message about staying in his room in the mornings.  Ultimately it doesn't matter if he wakes early so long as he's happy to hang out whilst you get your rest!  Zander has woken and amused himself for up to an hour every morning this week - I eventually go in and get him but he's not even asking me to!

Zander started to do the hysterical crying at his catnap consistently before we dropped it - maybe today it was more because he was overtired but it could also happen in the future because he's cross you're trying to put him to bed!

Have a good day.

Good point - I didn't even think of that - and here I am making him sleep..oh well
I didn't think he'ld be ready to drop his catnap so soon, but if he keeps doing it then I'll know..

Thanks - Talk later have a great evening
BTW - my DH loves the name Zander - he was looking over my shoulder this morning and noticed his name and thought it was pretty cool...
Cheers,
Zaibun

I doubt he'd have gone to sleep so soon if he wasn't tired so I'm sure you did the right thing.  Zander was just about the only name we both liked, we're really struggling for this next baby!
