please list some finger foods for me.
« on: December 21, 2006, 20:58:00 pm »
I don't know if finger foods are suppose to replace cereals and/or feeding them fruits and veggies. My LO is a week away from being 9 months old. Please list some finger foods and the ages of your LO. Please tell me how the finger foods are cooked if they are cooked.

MY LO is still not eating. Recently she does try to stick a piece of bananana I give her in her mouth and takes a few  bites here and there. She than plays with the rest and makes a mess "lol". Unfortunately she is on ear infection #6 and Dr. said before 1 they don't get concerned about solids but eventually it does become important. She stopped eating solids when she was about 7 months old. The doctor said keep offering. Such a pain when every day she says no to everything. She is drinking PLENTY of formula.

Actually yesterday she drank a total of 40 ounzes from 8am to 11pm.
Today so far she's had 23 oz so far.

My son will be 10 months on Sunday and he eats all finger foods, no more pureed baby food.  He eats: steamed green peas, steamed green beans or canned green beans without salt, sweet potato fries (cut up a sweet potato into french fry size strips, drizzle with a little extra virgin olive oil, then bake for 30-45 min at 375), cooked carrots (I actually buy the Gerber graduates jarred carrots, but you can just cut up carrots and steam them), banana, pear (wait for it to get really ripe, then it is nice and soft), apples (cook them in a pan on the stove on very low heat until soft), blueberries, peaches (really ripe or cook them like apples), plums, pasta, cheese, bread, chicken, beef, and Cheerios.  That is all I can think of for now.

When I first started finger foods, I just gave him a little, then finished with the purees.  But, once he got really good at eating the finger foods, then I just cut out the purees and just gave him finger foods.

I am sure it is frustrating that your lo won't eat, but just keep offering.  Make it a fun, light-hearted time and hopefully she will catch on.  I am sure if she has been struggling with ear infections that that is affecting her wanting to eat.  Have you tried offering solids before a bottle to see if she will take it then?  I think around 9 months they only need 20-25 oz of formula a day.  Maybe she is just not hungry for solids since she is drinking so much formula.

I hope this helps.  Let me know if you have any more questions.  Good luck to you!

oh yes I have offered before bottles, after bottles - all different time of the day. I have a pretty lenghty thread that was going on in regards to her not eating solids. She had cereals from 4 months to almost 7 months and was being introduced to frutis and veggies and than she just came to a FULL stop.

I would like to put together a list of finger foods to start trying. Please also keep in mind that when food goes down her throat "like the banana piece early" so always seems to open her mouth wide like shes about to gag even thought it's practically not in there yet. She's so not used to it I guess. She is also about 18 lbs and fairly short.

I am sorry you are having so much trouble.  I don't know what to tell you other than just keep offering.

Do you think she could try any of the foods I listed in my first post?  Peas are so small, maybe that would be easier for her to eat.  At first, I cut up everything into really tiny pieces and gradually have given him bigger pieces as he gets use to it.   Cheerios and Gerber Puffs both dissolve really easily, maybe she could try those.

Let me know how things go for you.

oh she does sometimes put a few gerber puffs in her mouth. nothing that would replace a meal but if she's in the mood she has popped a few in there. took awhile to even get used to them and start putting them in her mouth.

My daughter loves feeding herself and along with the things already mentioned she eats. Garbanzo beans-out of the can but rinsed.  She loves to play with them cause they roll around, grapes-cut up, cheese, tofu.  You may want to try spooning your child foods that have more texture so she gets used to lumpier things, like cottage cheese, lumpy applesauce, or a mixture of stuff you think she might eat.  Mine loves when I mix tofu, cottate cheese and peaches.  I love it cause it wipes out three food groups in one meal. Good Luck
