DS dont know how to go back to sleep
« on: December 28, 2006, 01:43:05 am »
Hello

Its me again, I feel like a veteran on this topic :-[

Anyway, DS is nearly 9 mo and we not getting much sleep. He wakes any time between 2-5:30 am. When he wakes we try patting first and he would sleep for only abt 1/2 hour or so and then wakes again As it gets closer to morning, its gets harder. We give him a dummy and that too would send him back to sleep for 1/2 hour or so. This happens until about 5/5:30 where he is arching his back, crying in frustration coz he clearly can't but wants to sleep. No amount of patting/dummy would help until we start his day at 6.

Routine wise.
6 wake B/fast
8 bottle
9-11 nap (sometime 10:30)
11:20 lunch
1:00 bottle
2-4 nap (sometimes 3:30)
3:30-4 bottle
5:00/5:30 dinner
6:10 bath, bottle and usually asleep by 6:45-7.

naps with dummy, goes to sleep independantly PD down awake after bottle, most of the time, else drowsy.

Developmental wise, he just started to crawl on all four. I can blame it on that, but then we have never had a good night sleep from him. ::)

I am wondering if it is hunger. For weight, he used to be in the 95 percentile, but has gone down to 70 now, height wise he is tall boy. He is now classed as under weight for his height.
We dropped his DF at 8 month and then battled teething and gastro (throwing up everyday for 10 days, during this time I offer a bottle whenever I can (I gave him a bottle on 2 or 3 of those nights) to get some nutrients in him). I am wondering now that he has recovered, perhaps his appetite is back and need more food. So back with DF?
I cant get him to take any more milk or solid at each meal as he gets fussy and is clearly not interested, plus I am scared he is going to throw up again so i dont push it.

I just dont know what to do with the morning wakings anymore. We have a trip planned, I am dreading it rather than looking forward to it :-\

Any advice, comment is appreciated

Have you tried giving him some water when he wakes up?
Emmy used to get really thirsty when she woke up,although it took a while for us to realise this  ::).
My 2 have always woken about 5ish and Emmy who's nearly 3 still wakes between 5 and 5.15am.
The other thing that helped us was not bathing at night 'cos it makes them wake (again a trial and error thing)
Also getting to bed 15 mins earlier could help as well.

Thanks Sarah

I tired water, but it didn't a make a difference, but I worked it out!!! Its seperation anxiety :D
Last night I gave him his dummy, but he wont settle and eventually refused to take the dummy. I think he worked out that I will leave the room if he takes the dummy.
I remembered reading a post about seperation anxiety and night wakings, how dad just bring in a blanket and slept in the room, so I stayed. I lied on the floor ::) He slept really close to the side of the cot to see me. I pretended to sleep and can see him lifting his head ever minute or so to see that I am there. He must have done it about 7 or 8 times and eventually went to sleep and slept til 6:45. His best ever! He just wanted someone to be with him :-* My little man :-*
So I guess the fact that we travelling and have to sleep in the same room is not such a bad thing afterall. :D

Thanks for advice tho, that reminds me, I will have offer him water as well, as its extremely hot here.
