Scared of Bath
« on: December 28, 2006, 02:35:33 am »
DS is 14 months old and until 2 days ago loved the bath. I was actually still bathing him in a baby bath in the big bath because there was a problem with the drain.  2 days ago we got the drain fixed. So that night I filled up the big bath with about an inch of water and I put DS in the water.  He started screaming, and shivering and shaking.  I took him out and got him dressed.  Tonight I tried to put him back in his little bath tub and we had the same screaming.  I tried showing him a new bath toy that I bought for him but he didn't want to know from it.  I feel like this is my fault.  Anyone have any ideas what to do from here.   I want him to like the bath again.

Perhaps he was scared by being in just the big bath for the first time (I assume that you mean that for 14 months he has been in a baby bath in the big bath)?  If so, I have a couple of suggestions (in no particular order!):

- put his playmat in the empty bath while he is fully dressed, just get him used to being there.  Assuming that this works, next time try him in just a nappy and gradually work up towards being in the big bath, 1 step at a time.

- get into the bath with him in your arms and try and make it as much fun as possible (sounds daft, but getting in by yourself once or twice might make it easier when you actually get in with him!).

Good luck, I'm sure you'll succeed!!!  :)

rosie had this problem too.  we found that actually we were not putting enough water in the big bath, so it wasn't as deep as she was used to in the baby bath.

it also did help for me to get in with her a few times too.

we also have playtime in the bathroom whist the bath is running.  the last few weeks she's actually been too keen and tried to climb in herself before it's done (no fear of her actually managing that - she's really not tall enough).

the other thing is to get some really really good bath toys for him to play with outside the bath and then inside the bath.

if he does cry and fuss when he's in there, the less reaction you give to that the better.  obviously it's hard but try and play and have fun yourself whilst he's fussing and then when he stops fussing give him a minute or so of having fun, and then get him out.

no point getting him out when he's fussing unless he really doesn't ever calm down - i found it took about 2-3 minutes with rosie to get her to notice the fun toys.  things which sprinkle water worked for her.

she doesn't like getting a wet face so that's something we have to avoid like the plague. so be careful splashing at him if he doesn't like it.
