refusing dinner
« on: December 28, 2006, 17:42:51 pm »
The last few days DS has refused to eat his dinner. I have given him finger foods, mushed food, a spoon so he can 'eat' himself and foods I know he likes. He has point blank even refused to try anything though. Just chucks the finger food on the floor without it even going near his lips. If he wasn't hungry then it would be fine-I know they have days when they don't want to eat much. BUT he IS hungry. He will have his milk and he will also happily have crackers and soft cheese or a biscuit. I'm just not sure how to respond. I usually try offering something else but he won't try that either. After a bit I give him his night bottle early and then if he has that (so I know he's having minimum requirement) I will give him the crackers and soft cheese spread so he won't wake up hungry. Is this the right thing to do? He eats lunch brilliantly but I am worried he isn't getting the proper range of nutrients. Any tips?

is he teething? Bradley is very picky when he has a new tooth coming in, especially a back one. I think as long as you continue to offer him different foods, thats the best thing. you cant forcde him to eat. have you tried feeding him yourself? How about a banana or something? let us know how you get on

Thanks for your responses. I have stopped given Ben a snack because it was really affecting his eating. He isn't a big eater anyway but he usually has something. Today, he'd had his lunch at 1pm and dinner at 5pm. It is possible that he is teething but he was fine at lunch. I guess it comes and goes though and this is probably yet another phase!  ::)
So its ok to just go with the bedtime snack then? Its so frustrating, especially when I've cooked something for him and then he just chucks it!

also - some kids are just like that if they eat a good lunch.

Liv has always grazed in the morning and then had lunch so consumes a good enough amount of calories between 8am - 1pm and then is hit and miss with dinner and has always been - some nights she just wants fruit salad - other nights she eats well. i just go with it and she has milk before bed and always sleeps through the night and still does not wake up starving in the morning.  it makes sense for her since she is most active in the mornign so needs all that fuel, then she has a long nap, then plays a little, has dinner and then some time before bed... which is why suddenly before bath she is starving for her milk again.
