VOMITS - When given protein from jar or homemade ???
« on: January 02, 2007, 12:49:42 pm »
Hey Mommies,

My LO is 8mths old and vomits immediately when I give her strained chicken, turkey, or lamb.  ::) :o How should I try offering it to her? I don't want her to become anemic.

All suggestions are welcome

Dree  ;)

Is she BF or on formula? Either way she's getting plenty of iron and protein right now. Many doctors don't recommend starting meats until 9 months, some 11 months as they are hard to digest and our LOs are still developing gut maturity. I'd hold off for now and try again in a month or more.

I would also suggest holding off on the meats. Just make sure she's getting proper iron from other sorces and she'll be fine.
When you reintroduce do so slowly and have it mixed with fruits or veggies you know LO is already ok with so that its not such a shock, and it will taste and feel better to your LO.

She is on a soy-based formula with added calcium (Alsoy 2). I was told by a GP (not her regular doctor) that it was important to offer her chicken (turkey, veal, lamb but to hold off on the beef) after veggies and fruit were introduced. If I did not do it soon then she will have a hard time with more textured food. Is that true?

I guess my best option is to wait another month to re-introduce it again... I will be seeing her ped in Feb for her vaccination. I will speak to him about it.

I guess there is no need to start freaking out yet. I told myself that I should at least be grateful that she is eating.

Has this ever happened to either of you ??? or to anyone else out there ??

Thanks for the advice

Dree  ;)

It did happen with us as we gave it to DD to early. We backed off and tried again in a few weeks. Mixing the food with other foods really can make a difference.

That'll sometimes happen. Just wait a few weeks and try again :)

Neither of my boys were offered meat until after 9mo, proabably closer to 10mo & they are big meat eaters... infact they both (3yo & 19mo) have been known to eat 2 lamb cutlets each & think nothing of an adult sized piece of chicken if they are hungry. All children are different & there is no grounds for them not eating something because they weren't offered it early enough.
For what it is worth, both my son's also HATED jar food... & ds#2 started sucking on pieces of beef (as I did as a baby) at 12mo.... left this stringly grey mass at the end
