Bf and a rubbish diet...
« on: January 02, 2007, 20:28:22 pm »
DD#2 is now 7 months. She has never had formula. Started solids at 6 months. She is growing very well, around the 75% for weight and height.

I a eat a good basic diet - plenty of fruit and veges and wholegrains etc. No problem, I enjoy healthy food.
However, the thing is on top of the good diet I am also eating junk - binges on a daily basis  :( I mean sweets (candy) or chips or biscuits (cookies). I know I really need to stop eating this rubbish to lose weight as well as feed baby but I am addicted. If I get even slightly stressed then I eat even more... :-[ I hear lots of Mums say they never have time to eat - well I seem to 'make' time, but if under pressure it will always be rubbish food...

Anyway, so I was wondering if some formula would be more beneficial for dd than milk from me on a diet including daily junk?

I really don't think so. Nothing can compare to breastmilk. I have read that you have to be extemely malnourished (think 3rd world famine) to compromise the quality of your milk. I think it would be better for YOU if you cut back on the junk if it makes you feel bad, but I don't think it should effect your lo. I know some children get gassy if Moms eat a ton of chocolate or whatever, but I don't think that's what you're asking. I ate a good basic diet most of the time, and indulged in treats more then I care to admit while nursing. Now I really have to stop that as I am no longer nursing and the pounds are starting to slowly creep on...

Sounds like your balance of healthy foods to junk is a whole lot better than mine... and I'm still bfing at 15 months.  Breastmilk is by far the best and as long as you are eating the healthy foods as well, your lo will be fine.

Proud to have breastfed for a combined total of 35 months

Hello,

You made me smile as you described me to a tee. I have a sweet tooth and lack enough willpower to quit the junk food. I am still bf my dd nearly 15 months down the line and she is thriving on it. I lost all my baby weight but it is beginning to creep back up as dd is nursing less.

Perhaps we should be 'quit junk food' buddies.  ;)

Your body will extract all the valuable nutrients to go towards your breastmilk and take nutrients from your own mineral stores - even from your bones. Sugar will contain lots of carbohydrates and energy.

You should stick with the mommy-made stuff.

P.S The LLL even say a mother who really can't give up smoking should continue to breastfeed. And that's from research comparing babies in a smoking home given formula and breastfed babies with a smoking mother.

Thanks so much for your replies. If feel better about it now.
I will try and make extra effort to cut down on junk food for ME though! Now that the holidays are over I think it will be easier and we won't have so much tempting food in the house.
