DO YOU KNOW SOMETHING ABOUT DRINKING FENNEL?
« on: January 03, 2007, 01:35:22 am »
Hi.  Looking for some ways to increase my milk supply some people have told me to drink fennel.  Do you know if this works?  Have some one taken something like that?

I have heard that drinking fennel tea can help relax your baby and make them less fussy. I have drank a ton of Mothers Milk tea in my day, not sure if it actually did anything but it made me sit down and relax which is always good for the supply ;)

What makes you think you need to increase your supply?

I don't know.  I'm always afraid of not having enough milk.  My baby is doing great and he eats every 3 hours, but I don't feel full anymore and that makes me feel worried.

I think after a few weeks it is common for you to feel "not full". I think it just  means that your milk supply is established and your body has figured out how much to make, so you don't get that "bursting" feeling anymore. It certainly sounds like your lo has it figured out, so long as he reaches his diaper count every 24 hours, is content most of the time (I say this 'cos most babies have their fussy moments), is gaining weight well, then all is good. How old is Marco? I know I have seen you around somewhere, I remember your avatar 'cos we had the same bouncy chair!

I agree with Michelle.  Here is a link from the FAQs that may also help to put your mind at ease about your supply:

Hi.  Marco is 13 weeks old and he is happy the most of the time, he sleeps well (8 hours at night which I think is ok) and he is growing up very well.  I used to feed him with just one breast all the time but 2 weeks ago I noticed that he was a little hungry after finishing one side, so I started to offer the other side too.  Is that a sign of low supply?

Not at all. Sometimes that happens around this age.  It could have also been a growth spurt.  My dd2 went back and forth.  For a while she was happy with one breast, then she wanted both, then she settled back to 1.  8 hours at night is great!

Sounds like you are doing a great job.  Keep it up  :)

Hi

I used fennel tea when my baby was gassy. It helps to calm down the bowels. Just boil water and add dried fennel to a teapot. You can heat it up. It worked for me! I haven't heard that fennel increases milk supply though...

I agree with the other ladies who suggest that there probably isn't a problem with your milk supply at all, but I totally understand your worry about it, I always want to feel like I have more milk than my LO needs too!

I have heard of fennel tea being good to drink for various reasons including increasing milk supply and for baby's colic.  I have used a nursing tea made a British herbalist called Napiers, which contains fennel.  I have found it very effective - I needed to use it when DD got a tummy bug and couldn't feed for a while.

It sounds like you are going great guns - 8 hours a night at 13 weeks is terrific!

You are supposed to stop feeling so full - please don't worry if that is your only concern. Many mothers lose that 'feeling full' sensation completely and it's not a concern - 'feeling full' is often about lymph and blood vessels supplying the newly developing and expanding milk ducts and milk production 'apparatus' and not so much about milk.

As far as I know fennel is more about settling baby and gas prevention rather than supply as others say- fenugreek is the supply herb usually.

In India we used fennel water to prevent wind. Don't know if it reallu works but my mom insisted I have it in the earlier weeks
