How do i make my own chicken or meat puree?
« on: January 03, 2007, 12:52:20 pm »
Hi i live in the south of Italy, and here they introduce meats very early on, one month after intro of solids. my paed has told me to buy the pureed meat paste that you get in jars and add that to the rice cereal with stock, but i cant bear to give my DS anything out of a jar... my hubby is also a chef and would just kill me if i even brought one into the house so how do i make my own ? MY DS is 23 weeks so have to start with the meat in a few weeks......(am starting solids tomorrow)

To make chicken or meat puree I just made a stew with veg dd had already tried and pureed it with a blender using the water it's been cooked in then froze it in ice cube trays. To be honest I tried dd with protein at about 7 months but she was having none of it, think it's a bit of an acquired taste, anyway she finally started at around 9 months, got her to eat chicken stew pureed and added pureed apricot into it for a few times.
Where in S Italy are you if you don't mind me asking? Dh is from that part of the world too.

Well my LO started puree meats before he turned 7 months, he was just a few days shy from being seven months.  He did ok with chicken.  Turkey was harder for him because it seems drier and the consistency is different.  I just started him on beef a few days ago and he really likes it.  Like Fiona said you just cook the meats with different vegetables that he has had and likes and cook it in some water so that you have some kind of nutritional and delicious broth.  If I have quite a bit of broth, I blend the veggi and meat with little broth and put the rest of the broth in small ice cubes that I can throw in later with something else (other veggies or other combos that need so liquid)  Of course the blended meat+veggies goes into ice cubes that I freeze.

I hope it helps.

Oh lucky you, we went to the Gargano a few years ago, fantastic and hope we will get to go back in a few years, dh really loved it. Dh is from a little town close to Bari which is gorgeous, great during Summer being right on the coast and so so quiet during winter.

i just love this website. I usually go home to SA for winter but because of DS arrival and the fact we are building a house, we have stayed put this year. I am finding it quite lonely, i am the only one of my friends  here in Italy with  a little one, and the italians also do things so diff..... it can be really hard with friends and family so far away, and this site lets me know that i am not alone, esp all the  prompt responses when you get confused about things. Thanks gals!!

I haven't yet mixed foods with my DD as I think she is a little young and can benefit more from tasting the meat as it originally is.  I cook the chicken whole in the oven and when its done I put it in the fridge to cool.  Once cool, I cut the chicken up into smaller pieces, add some water and puree using a hand blender.  I add water and puree the chicken until it is the consistency that I like.  I do the same thing for all types of meat.

Chicken was my DDs first food when she turned 6 mo and she loved it.  She hasn't had any problems with any types of meat.

here in italy the docs recommend that you add, powdered freezed dried meat - 40g is equivalent to 250g of the real thing, and it is organic etc etc as well as meat stock (home made) but honestly the freeze dried stuff makes everything taste like glue with the same consistency, no matter how delicious your stock and veg is, so am def going to be using all the above advice instead! can i cook meat or chicken in a steamer? and if so, how long?
