Why didn't she sleep?? I'm confused!
« on: January 03, 2007, 13:41:05 pm »
DD is one week old.  I am having various issues at the moment but they are being 'addressed' elsewhere on the site!

Just a quickie.  For the first time since being born and being home, Olivia woke from a sleep, had activity time (ie. she actually stayed awake for about an hour) then showed signs of being tired (she yawned!!).  So I swaddled her, placed her in the moses basket and left her to go to sleep.  She was up there an hour without going to sleep and without crying to be picked up or fed????  Why didn't she sleep?  I got her up in the end because we had to go out.  If she does this again do I just leave her?  Do I get her up?

I suspect at one week old, an hour was too long to be awake so she was overtired, hence couldn't settle for the nap.  Maybe there were some more subtle cues indicating she was tired before the yawn that were missed?  I know if I wait until I see a yawn from Evie, it is most likely too late and she goes into "overtired mode".  I now watch for her other cues like rubbing her eyes, and sucking her fingers.  When she was that young (before she could do either of these things) I think she used to turn her head back and forth and try to find her fingers.  Hope that helps and congratulations on the new baby!  I have to say I absolutely LOVE your avatar!  Just so precious! :)

Congratulations! I think Sue has some good points. You may need to really study her for those subtle cues, but it will be worth it. If she is happy, I wouldn't worry too much. It'll take a little while to get into a routine.

I think I am completely missing all the cues at the moment.  I think maybe I didn't realise it was due to being over-tired because (just for a change) she was crying.  I thought an hour was maybe a little too much awake time but foolishly thought she must be ok because she wasn't fussing.

Really have to try to relax more and try to watch for the signs.  Thank you for the advice.

Yes, it took me a long time to recognise the signs, so don't worry she is very young yet.
