Moving to other continent... how to deal with sleep time?
« on: January 04, 2007, 02:50:27 am »
Hi.  In a few weeks i'll be moving with my two children (28 and 4 months) from Colombia to Spain.  I want to know if you have any advice to "set their clocks" again because the hour difference is 6 hours.  What can I do to make them get used to the new schedule?  We'll stay there for 8 months at least.

Hi, sorry you haven't gotten any replies yet...I was hoping somebody who has done this could help you out a bit, as I certainly haven't!  :)  I'm hoping my posting will bump it back up so somebody might pop in.  Also, check out the link on flying internationally, might help a bit:

In August we moved from Spain to Thailand, which is 6 hours ahead. We flew through the night and 5.5 month old DD got some sleep but not her usual 12 hours. We left home at 9pm and by the time we got to our new home here it was around 10pm, so a day had passed without much sleep and she was certainly ready to go down for the night. Lots of :'( :'(

We let her sleep for as long as she wanted that night and I think she woke around 11am, so she had had a pretty good sleep. She then had an afternoon nap and a catnap and went down as usual at 7pm. We woke her up at 8am the next morning, which was awful because we were so jet-lagged ourselves! But it was worth it because she was then back on track, as quickly as that.  ;) ;D

There is a lot to deal with, with the time difference, the stimulus of the airports, the plane, the flight, the people on the flight poking and disturbing and shaking things in LO's face in the middle of the night, the travelling either side of the flight and most likely severe over-tiredness at some point. We were worn out and stressed the day we travelled and the day after but waking up early the second day paid off big time and once LO was sorted we could focus on catching up ourselves!  ;)

I wish you a smooth and happy journey. I know just how stressful it is but it really won't take long to get back on track if you have a plan and stick to it. Good luck and have a safe journey. :-*

Hi There,
I took dd to Ireland when she was 6 months old and back when she was 9 months and there is a 3 hour time difference. Took her this year again to Italy with a 2 hour time difference and I put her on local time as soon as possible, gave her a chance to catch up on some sleep the first day but went with local 7.30pm bedtime and from day 2 went with our normal routine on local time so a 7.30 wake up. It worked perfectly for us both times. I know 6 hours is a bit more difficult but I think it's really the only way.
