No snacks between meals - reassurance needed
« on: January 04, 2007, 14:43:57 pm »
My 15month dd has become increasingly picky about food. I've noticed that if I give her a small snack between meals (such as a couple of rice cakes or bread sticks or a few grapes mid morning and mid-afternoon) then she'll often eat nothing at mealtimes. So, I've opted to cut snacks out altogether which has definitely helped with mealtimes.  BUT... I'm worried that still so young she needs more regular feeding than that.  She's got a fair bit of yummy baby podge to keep her going so she's certainly not fading away hence why I figured this would be ok but some reassurance/info would be very welcomed.

Thanks,
Kelly

I tell you that my dd1 never snacked between meals.  Occasionally she would have some Cheerios.  Since preschool started, the snacks have been more frequent, but certainly not every day.

Proud to have breastfed for a combined total of 35 months

We cut out snacktime around that age too. He'll go through phases of needing a small snack every so often, but for the most part, he's fine without it!

Riley has no am snack, pm snack varies. I usually try to make sure it is something nutritious that I can count as part of his meal, so no more filler foods, such as Gerber puffs, baby biscuits etc. Sometimes he does best with mini meals anyway

Thanks everyone... I really appreciate your reassurance and after much progress over the last week I think I'll stick to limiting snacks.

Hi!

Sophia has not snacked at all.  I have offered her in the past but she just plays with her snacks/finger foods.  She eats quite a bit at each meal time and bfeeds 3 times a day.  On ocassion we have given her those very light Gerber puffs-finger food (snacks) that melt in the mouth and she has just started enjoying those.  I have always been concerned about her snacking and her missing out on the more balanced nutrition at meals.  Fortunately she enjoys her meals so far and pretty much eats very well.  I am no nutritionist or pediatrician but I think that if they eat fairly well-balanced meals without problems then the snacking is okay...kwim?

I thought babies should have 3 meals and 2 snacks a day. Holden has cheese and crackers for pm snack and cheerios and bannanas for am snack. He has been eating alot lately though. Maybe a growth spurt. Even adults should have 5 small meals a day. Just a thought .
