RE: Eating on Vacation for 13 month old
« on: January 07, 2007, 16:37:33 pm »
Anyone have any advice and/or experiences with your toddler's eating on vacation in a different country?
We are taking DS with us to Mexico the first week of February.  We are staying at a very well-appointed, large all-inclusive resort close to Cancun.  There are a variety of restaurants (I think something like 10 in total) and they have pasteurized dairy and whole milk available.  I spoke to my dr. about the trip and he has given us the green light, just said to stay away from raw veggies as well as raw fruit (unless we clean and peel them ourselves).  Have any of you taken a lo away to a similar vacation and if so, any tips on their eating there or how they did with it?

Thanks!

Thanks, Stacy!  I was actually at the dr's about 2 weeks ago for round 2 of B's flu shot and asked about that and he said he was too young for the twinrx.  I thought that was the only one available.  I am going to call his office and see if he can look into the pediatric versions.  My only thought is maybe he didn't mention it because it's not available in Canada?  I'll look into it, for sure!!!

Although he will pretty much be on whole milk completely by then, I am going to bring a small can of powdered formula, 1 or 2 little cans of the condensed stuff and a few enfagro samples I got in the mail, just in case he won't drink the milk there.  I'm sure he will eat the yogurt but I am also going to bring a small bag of cheese strings for him and snacks he likes, just like you are.  Right now he is big on gerber puffs, the freeze-dried fruits by gerber (well, we get the cheaper walmart ones), ww crackers, gold fish crackers and beechnut brand baby banana cookies so hopefully he'll still like those.  I'm also going to bring a 6 pack of apple sauce.  AND pedialite just in case he gets some tummy woes.

I'll pop back in when I get a reply from the dr.

When we traveled with Mouse, we also took along some of her favorite dry cereal and a couple of toddler meals "just in case".
When you're soaring through the air, I'll be your solid ground.  Take every chance you dare.  I'll still be there when you come back down.

We went to Cuba when dd was 12 months old and I was worried about the food even though we were staying in a 5 star as I've heard so many bad reviews about the food in both Cuba and Mexico. I packed a small suitcase of baby food in jars even though I make all her food at home normally, along with a box of her cereal. Dd has a milk protein allergy so I wasn't giving formula or milk as she is still bf'd. The food turned out to be great where we stayed, I did use some of the jars as I was concerned about the sodium content at times, and I always brought the cereal for her at breakfast. If I were to go again I would only bring her cereal at this age.

Thanks for the continued trips.  Stacy, I forgot you are in Canada,  :-[, I knew that from before?  I will call a travel clinic (hadn't bothered to call the dr. yet as DS is sick right now which is keeping my hands full at the moment!)  As for food, we are going to have to cross our fingers that it's fine but I have read a million reviews and it sounds like very few people have had problems.  DS has not wanted to go near a spoon since 8 months with the exception of applesauce, yogurt, cottage cheese and broccoli ( ??? go figure that one, lol!) so I'll be bringing some snackies and hope for the best otherwise!  Good idea on the "toddler meals" - I'll try one or two before we go to see if he'll eat them and if he does, I'll bring a few in case of "emergency."  Hopefully he doesn't get picky before we go, as you warned me about a few weeks ago on another thread, Stacy!  ;)

Hmmmnnn...talked to the only travel clinic in town today and they don't give shots to kids under 12 so they redirected me back to my doctor.  I'm going to call first thing tomorrow but he is going on vacation starting Saturday for two weeks.  We may be out of luck!

Ahhh...I hadn't even thought of canned fruit!  I'll bring along a pkg of the little delmonte cans packed in fruit juice.  I'm also going to bring along a pkg. each of the freeze dried apples and banana/strawberry and two 4 packs of the president choice brand organic toddler applesauce.  We'll be fine to give him any fruit we can peel ourselves so I'm sure there will be a few things like bananas as well as fruits that have only been cut in half so we can cut off the exposed part on the top and peel the rest for him.  It's just too bad on the fruits, otherwise, since there will be so much fresh stuff and he LOVES, LOVES, LOVES it all!
