help please re night wakings
« on: January 09, 2007, 13:16:54 pm »
hi

just looking for some help re my 6 month old baby night wakings.  I have posted on the easy board but they e asked me to post here too.

This is my babys plan

hi

e 7am bf, solids 8am
s 9-9.30am  1-1.1/2 hours
e 11am bf, solids 12 pm
s 1pm 1to 2 hours
e 2.30/3pm bf
e solids 4pm
s 5pm nap 30 mins
e 7pm-8pm
bed 7.30 - 8pm

wakes at 10/11pm ( did DF but now she is always awake)

try not too bf again until 2.30am  but she is often awake and diffiucult to get back to sleep, than sometimes only sleeps 10 mins. she can be om/off all the time until I feed her.  When I have fed her she will sometimes sleeps for 2/ 3 hours.

in the day and at bed time she goes in cot awake and settles herself.  In the night I also put her down awake but she will not settle or wakes up screaming a short time later.  she does try to get to sleep (bangs legs)

unsure what to do??  months ago she was sleeping 8pm until 1am

should I bf more often in the day?? or increase the solids??

baby is small only about 14 pounds but all family is small she is also very active.

I have 2 other children but this is the first one I have be able to bf.

any help welcome, lack of sleep is driving us all mad

I would love to heard the advice....This sounds exactly like my LO for the past few weeks .  She will be 6 months on Friday.  She is just starting on solids so we are only doing 1 meal a day currently but she is on a  very similar schedule otherwise.  We used to only wake once (in addition to df which she now wakes for) but now can be 2-3 times.

My first thought was maybe gas pains?  My dd did this a lot the first couple weeks when we introduced solids so I started back tracking a bit to find out what was causing the discomfort.  I'm still not positive, but when I eliminated apple sauce and carrots from her diet she seemed much improved and the night wakings stopped.  I've since reintroduced carrots, but I only give them to her in the morning so if they upset her tummy, it will be over by bedtime.  I'm pretty sure it was gas since it sounded like her pain cry.  I couldn't get burps out of her so I assume the wind was past that point and so she was very uncomfortable unless I nursed her or firmly held her tummy and pumped her legs.  Hope that helps and good luck.

Hey Deb!

We had the same problem after we started solids.  Gas pains could be the issues...Do you find that she settles immediately after she passes gas?  Or do you always feed her when she wakes?

The other thing it could be is that your DF is starting to interrupt her sleep.  This happens often too.  If she is waking for her dream feed, then Tracy suggests that it could be time to wean them off it.  Sounds like she is eating a lot during the day so I wouldn't worry about how much she's taking in.  You may try w2s if she is pretty consistent with waking up.

Also...if she's waking right after you put her down, you may want to take a look at the timing of that waking...is it after 30 minutes or after 45 minutes?

HI

Thank you for your reply,  baby will normally sleep for 2/3 hours from when she goes in cot.

She normally goes to bed between 8-8.30pm but tonight she was in cot asleep at 7.20pm,  hope this will help

Hi Deb,

When you did w2s did you just stir a little?  When I did this, I just went in and put my hand on her chest and then left the room after about 5-10 minutes.  That way she didn't actually wake up and I didn't actually wake her.

What about the gas pain issues?  Do you think she may be experiencing some of that discomfort and then just using a feeding as a comfort thing?
