how long does your 9 month old stay up
« on: January 09, 2007, 13:50:02 pm »
ok I think I asked this before - but I can't find it and now I forget for some reason. Must be my pregnancy "lol".
My LO tends to stay up for at least 3 hours if not 4 hours at a time. I know some have expressed opinions toward this is a long time and how I might be missing her tired queues. I'm sure that happens at times - although not sure about all the time. Her up time has been between 3 and 4 hours for quite awhile. What is frustrating is when she goes even longer than 4 hours - that's when she's probably over tired I guess. There are some times where she might be sleeping in a little less than 3 hours of up time. Sometimes in the morning she'll act real tired like only an hour after getting up or 2 hours. I don't try to put her down for a nap that early after waking up do I? What are your average up times? She is 9 months and almost 2 weeks now. Long story made short - she isn't really into into solids, picks a little and is on bottles. Wakes at night for at least one bottle. Usually falls back to sleep but lately it's been taking me an hour to get her to fall back to sleep. She sleeps from about 8pm to 6am with that one wake up. That is an average. Bed time is anywhere from 7pm to 8:30pm and wake up time is anywhere from 5:30am to 7am.

Hi Mary,

My DD is 8mths old. She is up 3hrs max. I think by the time she is 9mths old she will probably be doing 3.5-4hrs max. You should work on trying to catch her sleep window. Watch for signs of tiredness and write it down if you have to. I still a log book of my DD's day.

Does she eat any solids when you feed her? She needs to eat more solids and drink less milk at this stage of the game. How many oz's does she drink a day and how many bottles are made? What does her Ped say ?

Sorry for the questions, I guess I am a little concerned that she is not eating much solids. That is not good. She needs to eat more otherwise she may reject table food later. That is probably why she is waking up. She is hungry

This mornings nap - I didn't pick her up. It took about an hour. I kept trying to hold her down in teh crib - patting her back....than I'd leave the room especially when she basically wouldn't let me keep her lieing down. I'd go lie down on my bed for 5-10 minutes and of course she'd be playing. i'd walk back in and put her back down again and pat her back or stroke her cheek. This continued for almost an hour when she finally fell asleep after I made her lie down again. but I didn't hold her. She got up at 6am this morning I think - but I sort of slept off and on until 6:30am while she played in her crib standing up. It's 9:55am and she just basically fell asleep.

I've had a lot of people say that her up times are too long?

Well the eating situation is a long story and there are a few posts in eating solids forums - you might want to check them out. Dr. said you can't force and to keep trying to offer. She basically refuses the spoon or any purees at this point so we can only rely on trying to get her to eat finger foods. there are days where she at least seems interested- not that it every amounts to much. She did eat cereals religeously morning and night from 4 months to almost 7 months and had started on level 1 fruits and veggies at 6 months. but at 7 months she quit cold turkey eating anything!!!. Finger foods that she does sometimes pick on are peas, bagel pieces, cheese, cheerios, pasta stuff.

I notice she tends to cluster feed in the morning "drinks her first 2 bottles with only 2 to 2 1/2 hours apart" and cluster feeds at the end of the night. Example: Last night at 5:30 she had I believe it was at least 6 oz and than another 8/9 oz at around 7:30. Sometimes she'll even want her last 2 oz before bed and she won't go to sleep until I end up giving her these last 2 oz. I try feeding her all different times of the day. Anyways - I was suppose to make a long story short. There has been some suggestions on trying to get her off the night bottle. Last week - she went through a stage where for 2 night she got up for 2 bottles. She had gone to bed early "7pm" and needed a bottle at 11pm and than again at 3am. I am trying to water the bottles down a little at night.

oh I was keeping track recently - but not this week. She drinks I believe between 30 and 40 oz in a 24 hour   day. Maybe a little less at times but I kept track for a good week or more and it was between 30 and 40 oz.

Hi M,

Sorry to hear about the spoon refusal.  :-[I have an idea of what you must be going through. When I have a moment I will try to catch up on the reading on the other thread but seeing that you are presently on line,  I figure I could try helping you now.

Did she have a recent illness like gastro (stomach flu)? I ask because this happened to my DD as well. She started gagging when I made her homemade food. Turned out that it was not strained enough. So, in order for me to re-introduce food. I would put a bit of food on my finger and feed her that way. When she opened her mouth I would give her a small amount of food on the spoon. This helpled open her appetite. Did you try that ?? How often do you try to feed her? It might be teething. Again, I say this because it happened to my LO too. She had a hard time eating because she was in pain.

Your DD is definitely hungry. Watering down her bottle will get her frustrated. You do not want to do that. I would try increasing the finger foods during the day and decreasing her oz's (bottle).

I hope that helps

I was advised to only try to water down some of the middle of the night bottles - especially when she's waking up for 2 of them which is bit much for her age.

Well she hasn't had any stomache bug or sickness. She has had a LOT of ear infections and could be what started all of this. She's had 6 of them from 4months of age to now. The last one started about 8 or 9 days before xmas day and she was on medicine for 10 days. We have even "luckily we can right now" taking her out of day care because of this.

Well she SOMETIMES will take food from my hand. My motherinlaw fed her spagetti last week and said she thought she did rather well - but she had to feed it to her. One time after basically not eating AT ALL - on xmas night we had a break through - at my moms she let me put very small pieces of lasagna in her mouth. but lately she won't even let me finger feed her. i have to rely on her to pick up the food off her try which is very slow if she even does it and than she misses her mouth 1/2 the time.

I try feeding her an hour after her bottle, I even try feeding her when it's bottle time. Dr. asked - do you try when she is hungry? I said yes. I have tried 2 hours after her bottle. ect. I just try different times.

In the mornign she is used the cluster feeds so it's hard. but an hour after the bottle - i sat her in teh chair with some cut up "delmonte fruit', and a few cheese pieces. She actually let me put a COUPLE small bits of the melon I had to cut up into her mouth and she picked up maybe 2 cheese pieces. These pieces are rather small. I sometimes try to sneak in some oatmeal as she used to love her oatmeal but it doesn't work.
2 hours or so after the first bottle she had her 2nd bottle and than it was nap time.

((((((((( HUGS )))))))))). Your poor LO.  :(  7 ear infections ??? I can't believe it. This happened to my nephew too. Their Ped. put in these special tubes in his ears that dissolve on their own. This was to prevent future ear infections. It worked. You should ask your Ped. about it. She might be too young to do it now but you should look into it.

I don't think there is anything wrong with feeding her until she gets used to feeding herself. She is only 9mths old and you need to re-introduce eating again.

I do think that you should discourage cluster feeding in the morning though. I think offering bits of cheese is the way to go.

Our DS is about 9.5 mo. He's usually awake 3-3.5 hrs before 1st nap (unless he wakes unusually early).  After 1.5 hr nap, he's awake for right about 4 hrs. Then another 1.5 hr nap. Then at least 3 hrs before bed. We've had the 4 hrs midday for about a month.

If he acts really tired, I'll put him down early for 1st nap and hope for one of his naps to be a bit longer.

So say he's awake for 3 hours? How long before the 3 hours is up do you start putting him down for a nap? Or at the 3 hour mark for example you bring him up? How long does it take him to fall asleep for his nap? Does he do it on his own or do you help him?
