questions for the "no-nappers"
« on: January 10, 2007, 14:42:21 pm »
My 29 month old is on a nap strike.  I'm trying desperately to get her napping again but it's difficult during the week because I'm at work.  My dh advises that he gave up his nap very early as a toddler and since she is his female "mini-me" I'm not sure I'm going to get her to sleep during the day.  I'm planning on offerring her quiet time in the afternoon, but I'm just wondering for those of you who also have little ones who don't nap or go on periodic nap strikes:

1.  How much night sleep does your lo get?  Margot started off with about 12.5 hours but we're  at about 11.75 now--mostly due to me not being able to get home and get her into bed before 6:45 pm.  I just don't know if that's enough.

2.  Has anyone had any success shifting sleep times back a bit?  With the nap she would normally sleep at 8 or 8:30 until 6:30 or 7.  Since she hasn't been napping and waking at 6:40, my aim is to have her asleep by 6:40 in the evening--a tough task, given that I can rarely make it home before 6.  I would love to push her time back, even 20 to 30 minutes from 7 to 7 even.  Has anyone done this shift and if so how?  Last night she didn't fall asleep until 7 but was up at 6:35.

Hi Hun

My DD hasn't had an afternoon nap since she was about 26/27 months (she's just turned 3). We moved her bedtime earlier when she stopped napping so she was going to bed at around 7pm and waking around 8.00am (so getting about 13 hours).

Since my DS was born she's started getting up earlier and she's also started playschool so she's more tired in the afternoon now. She refuses to nap any more but to counteract this we've put in some quiet time in the afternoon when she gets in from school (she chills on the sofa with juice, biscuit and a DVD) and have moved her bedtime to 6.30pm. That seems to be working okay.

HTH

love
Marie

Tyler's been napping off and on for about 1 yr now. At that age, if he didn't nap, he'd go to bed at 730 and get up around 8 or 830. I tried not to pay attention to how many hrs of sleep he was getting because his sleep requirements changed all the time depending on what he did that day. I'd go by his mood...if he seemed happy enough, I didn't tinker with it. If he was cranky, he went to bed earlier.

Margot doesn't show her overtiredness by mood or behaviour--except during the night.  Overtiredness, especially cumulative, guarantees us night wakings and if she's not napping, I'll have even a harder time getting her back on track, so that's why I'm trying to be proactive.

The good news is that she napped for 1.5 hours today, so whatever she's been getting lately I guess hasn't been enough. The funny thing is that we've had jackhammers going inside our house due to some drain problems, so the house was loud, stinky and shaking for the better part of the day!  The nap secret--found!

I think I'll just aim for a minimum 12 hour night  leep on those days she doesn't nap and hope that I don't lose my job for having to cut out to get her down early!

Thank you both for your help.
