When do you get rid of the bedtime bottle?
« on: January 10, 2007, 19:02:41 pm »
Currently DS is getting a bottle of whole milk in the morning and a bottle in the evening, right before bedtime. Do we need to get rid of this bottle and if so, when?

Alex still has a bottle of milk in the morning and bedtime, I like her to have 18 ounces of whole milk and this is the only way that she will drink that much.  She drinks it in one full hit and we brush her teeth after so I can't see that it will affect her.  Nathan had his bottle until he was 2 and a half then he wanted a cup so I gave him one.  He still has a glass of milk with breakfast and at bedtime.  I didn't think that there was any need to stop.

We stopped the bedtime bottle 5 days ago, and so far ds drinks a lot less milk, and has decided that sippy cup time is playtime!  (It's been a little harder to get him to bed.)  Now I wish I had waited, but I don't want to go back to bottles since I already stopped.  Our morning bottle was gone by 14 months, I think.

I stopped all bottles at a year when I went back to work (selfishly because I didn't want the babysitter having "my" special time with Andrew  :-[) so he would have a sippy at breakfast, lunch and dinner and a smidgen of milk in a bottle at bedtime, but after a few days he looked at me like he didn't know what to do with it.

With Ewan the bottles were all gone by shortly after he turned one.

Bram only has one bottle now and that is only 3 ounces as I am in the process of weaning it out.  Now we do some cereal before the bath as well.

How did all you guys switch your los to sippy cup? My 1-yr old refuses milk from the sippy.

Mine wouldnt do the sippy cup either until I taught him how to suck from a straw first. ITs a much different mouth position than a bottle is and takes a bit getting used to. The straw gave him immediate results (if i suck there is juice) whereas with a sippy cup (well most sippy cups) you have to suck really really hard to get anything out).

Just a thought  :)

I second straw cups, or just practise with a regular cup. We also took the valves out of the regular sippy cuus to make it easier. It is soooo hard when the valves are in, I tried it!

She doesn't get the straw yet.  She has been able to drink out of a sippy cup for several months, but will only do water - she refuses milk unless it's out of a bottle. Maybe I'll keep trying the straw.q2wwq`
