No More Bottles !!!!
« on: January 14, 2007, 21:49:52 pm »
YAY!!!

We are officially off bottles and onto sippy cups  ;D

DS decided yesterday that he was eventually going to hold his own bottle.  He started walking round the house only taking sips from it, so I decided to switch his teat for his sippy cup spout (keeping the rest of the bottle the same) we use the Avent bottles and sippy cups.

DS did not even notice the difference and happily chugged down 5 oz (not as much as he would of in a bottle but it is progress).

I thought I would try again this evening, and he did it again - took 5 oz and did not even notice the difference.

That's it, we are officially off bottles  ;D

That is great!
I have been trying to get dd of bottles for 2 mths and I just can't do it. We also use the avent bottles and sippy and she absolutely loves water from the sippy, but the second that I put milk in there or change the teat on the bottle she will not drink it. I have also tried 2 different sippy's. She currently has 2 bottles and 1 sippy of milk(only 1 oz if I am lucky) We have been trying to get her off her morning bottles as well, but then she will not be getting enough milk in.

I think I may have spoken too soon......  :(

He has refused his milk both last night and tonight.

Will keep on persevering, and will let you know how we get on.

Lana, I know what you mean about losing the cuddle time - that was the only time Tom would ever sit with me  :'( He is a real daddy's boy.

Hi Girls!

I noticed this thread on the bottle thing and i've been wanting to get my baby girl off them but i don't know where to start. What do these sippy cups look like?? I bought one just the other day but she can't drink out of it - i think its a slow flow one and she gave up having her milk in it in the end just because she was getting frustrated that it wasn't coming out quick enough. She's fine having water from a beaker (is that a sippy cup by the way??) so i'm sure there won't be any problems with her having her milk from a cup instead of the bottle. Just need to know where you get sippy cups from and are they just beakers??? (If you get any of that!)

Oh and she is coming on 13 months at the end of January - is that too early? Cos they say try and get them off a bottle by the age of 1 but i wasn't too concerned about it because my nephew and niece are both still drinking from bottles and they're both past 2 years old. I would prefer to have my girl off them now though. Just personal preference. Your advice would be appreciated!!

Thanks

Hi

A sippy cup is a beaker with a spout on and handles which makes it easier for them to drink out of.

I don't think that 13 months is too early, if you can get your lo to drink her milk out of them, then by all means try.  They say to aim to get your lo off bottles by the time they are 2.

Well today was not a good day again - DS refused his milk completely  with the sippy cup  :( so I gave him a bottle and he chugged it down.

I am going to keep on persevering , and hopefully he will start taking some out.

It seems like we have taken 2 steps backwards, cause he drank out of them on Saturday and Sunday.  So am not sure why he is refusing his milk out of it  :-\

Thanks for the hugs and support Lana.

Still no luck today.  He cried and cried until I gave him a bottle.

I am really not sure how to proceed from here.  He is only having 1 bottle a day - started refusing his morning milk ages ago.  Is it really so bad that he still has it in a bottle?

Its not bad at all hon.  If you and he are not ready to cut it out then dont sweat it.

When does he have the bottle?  Could you just slowly make it smaller to wean it like a DF?

Paula

Try and offer an oz or so in the sippy (or as much as he will take), then when he wants the bottle give him the remainder of the milk in that.

He should hopefully increase the amount he initially has in the sippy over time, so the amount in the bottle will decrease and eventually all milk will be in the sippy.

HTH's

Let me know how you get on  :-*

Lana, he usually has his bottle right before bed - he refused his morning one consistently for a month before we dropped it.  To be honest I am wondering if he is just being fussy at the moment, as he is going through a really fussy phase - his favourite food was yogurt and now he even refuses that  ::)  I am so ready for him to wean off bottles, but I think he has other ideas - or he just does not know what he wants  :-\

Lauren, that sounds like a good idea, I am going to try that.  Today he wanted his bottle and only took 2 oz from it and then kept on shaking his head to say no he does not want anymore.

Thanks for sticking it out with me  ;)

Today was a better day.  He drank his milk out of his sippy, although it was only a few oz.  He just was not interested in his milk tonight.

His teeth have been bothering him too, so am wondering if this could also be the problem why he is being so fussy.

I know he can do it, so it is just a matter of persevering.  Fingers crossed tomorrow goes a bit better.

Will keep you posted........

Yeah it could be that he is just turned off the sippy or anything for that matter because of the teething.  I hope it continues to go well for you.

No worries sometimes it can be a harder transition for mom than for LO :'(.  I think sometimes that can hold back the process cause LO will pick up on your stress over the bottle drop KWIM?  Besides he is only having one per day so that is not a huge deal and you have lots of time to get rid of it.

It has definitely got to be teething.  Thomas refused his dinner tonight as well as his evening milk.  I offered him everything and anything I could think of that he absolutely loves and he just grunted and shook his head.

Hopfeully tomorrow will be better  :-\

He refused his dinner again tonight.  And all he did was play with his sippy of milk.  He just does not seem interested.

He does not seem to be in pain with his teeth, but his hands are constantly in his mouth, so they must be bothering him.

Well I guess we will try again tomorrow.

Success

We eventually had sucess today  ;D  We were in the shops and DS was pointing to something on the shelf.  I took him over to the shelf and he was pointing to a sippy cup.

I asked him which one he wanted and he picked up an Small Nuby soft spouted sippy cup.  I decided to buy it thinking that this is going to be another cup that lands up in the cupboard not being used.

Anyway, I though I would give it a try, put his milk in it, heated it up, and gave him his cup.  He put it straight in his mouth and tried to drink, but it was not coming out quick enough, so I made the holes a bit bigger, he drank 6 oz in 1 go.

He seemed really happy with his cup, and I was really happy that he was drinking it.

Hopefully tomorrow will be as sucessful.  ;D ;D ;D ;D ;D

My little one started out loving the sippy cup at 6 months old. Then at 10 months old he dropped down to 2 bottle feeding a day.  This made us worry because he didn't want to drink milk at all, and was still not drinking a lot of water.  We found a gerber graduate sippy cup.  It had a soft spout.  He loves it!  Won't drink milk from it, but downs about 8 oz of water during the day!

Well today was not as sucessful.  I think he was quite tired as he had been wingy all day.

He took about 3 oz of it, and I stuck to my guns.  He kept on shaking his head, but I told him it was his big boy cup, and he eventually drank some.

I know over the next few days are going to be hit and miss, but once he realises he should start drinking a lot more.

Again, thanks for all the support  :-*

No worries.  ;D

Right now B only has about 9-11 oz per day of milk so I just make sure he gets cheese and yogurt and stuff.  It took E a few months to get his consumption up as well.  I think they just need to get used to a whole new way of eating and drinking and it takes time.

Well today he refused his milk.  He has been a right cranky pants these past few days, so I am not sure if this has anything to do with it.  He has been refusing meals, or just starts screaming at the site of his bowl or in the middle of eating.

Anyway I will just keep on trying.  The bottles are in the back of the cupboard, so won't be coming out again - especially since I know he can do it.  Just going to take some time to adjust.

I am not too worried about his intake.  He usually has about 8oz in his cereal, and then has 2 yogurts a day, and sometimes some cheese.

Yeah I think he is teething, that would definitely explain the tears for no reason and the moodiness and gumpiness.

He seems to be working on his last eye tooth for ages now, it just has not come through.  That is the last of his 1 year teeth, and to top that off I think his 2 year molars are coming through too, his gums are pretty raised.

Thankfully (and fingers crossed) it has not affected his sleep, so will take the grumpiness etc for now  :-\

Well today we had sucess again  ;D ;D

I went into the kitchen, he followed me and stood outside the gate, I warmed his milk in his sippy, and I just handed it to him.  He took it and walked over to the couch.  I put him on the couch, he had a sip and gave the cup to me.  I said do you want mummy to do it, and I gave it to him and he drank 6 oz.  ;D ;D ;D 8)

He ate all his food today too, so maybe his teeth are not bothering him as much either.

I feel like we are getting there slowly but surely.

Thanks again for sticking with us.

It was definitely his teeth bothering him today.  He ate some of his dinner, and drunk half of his milk.

At least he is drinking out of his cup.  I think we eventually have him weaned  ;D

Howdy,

I wonder if you guys could give a novice some advice please?

My little man is almost 15 months and I give him two bottles per day - 2 x 9oz, one before nap and one at bedtime. He drinks no probs out of a sippy cup for water etc but haven't faced the milk situation yet.

My question is that his bottle signifies sleepy time, so do I simply swap the bottle for the cup and carry out the same routine? For example, bedtime, I get him washed, into PJ's heat up his milk, take him up to his bedroom and give him his bottle before putting him down. Do I just swap the bottle for the cup or should he drink his milk before bath, PJ's etc?

I've currently got him the anti-spill Tommie tippee cups, with the spout you need to bite on to release the juice, I think I might be better with an easier flowing cup, can you recommend one please?

We're expecting another baby early July so would make life easier if he's off bottles but don't want to disturb his routine too much as at the moment he gets his milk, we put him down and he goes straight to sleep  :).

Thanks in advance for any help.

Stace x

Hi Stace,

From what you have probably read from my post, the key to the change is consistency and perseverance.

It was really tough on us, my DS was very stubborn and went through a couple of days where he refused milk point blank, me caving in and giving him the bottle again and of course him teething.

Our DS uses the Avent cup for his water and juice but was not happy with drinking his milk out of it.  I think he associated it with juice and water and when he took a sip out of it would spit it out.  He did drink from it for one or two days and then he out right refused.

Our DS ended up picking his own sippy cup :o and has been drinking from it since.  He chose the Nuby soft spout one.  It has slits in it like a sippy cup but has a softer spout and he has really taken to this.  Once he is used to this sippy, we will start to persever with another cup that has a harder spout.

A lot of people have also suggested a sippy cup with a straw - Can your lo drink from a straw?  This might be worth a try, as it is fun, and may make your lo enjoy the new way of drinking milk.

I would stick to offering milk at the same times you usually do and see how you get on.  If you find that your lo is dropping his intake and not taking very much, you can always up his dairy intake with cheeses, yogurts, milk in cooking, custards etc.

Hope this helps
