split - Habitual waking - wake to sleep info??
« on: January 14, 2007, 22:01:20 pm »
I'm very new here...I read the Baby Whisperer about 2 weeks after my daughters birth.  Everything has worked amazing and she's 6 months old now.  She's been sleeping through the night but recently wakes every night at 4 and just wants her pacifier.  What is the "wake to sleep" concept? I don't find it in the book, and I'm wondering where I can find it or if someone can explain it to me? Thanks :)

Welcome to BW!  :)  It's always nice to hear success stories like yours.

Wake to Sleep (or W2S) is pretty simple really. The idea is to make LO stir, but not actually wake if that makes sense. You want to switch their sleep cycle which can be done by stirring them but not waking. Depending on how light or heavy a sleeper your DD is, you want to sneak in and stroke her cheek or tug the blanket or whatever will do the trick without actually waking her. It should be done 30 - 60 minutes before the waking time, so you would do it between 3 and 3:30.

Thank you for this, I actually searched this site a bit more and found  a lot of information on the w2s concept.  I will definitely try this.  I also went back to my book and read that I am possibly reacting too quickly and should see if she actually goes back to sleep on her own.  Last night I didn't go in right away, and she went back to sleep on her own and didn't wake until 6:45...happy and played in her crib giggling alone til I went in at 7.  Nap time is a different story though, she's doing the 45 min nap, so I'm going to try the w2s today. Thanks ;)

I'm not sure if I did the w2s right, but I went in about 5 min before she typically wakes, she stirred a little and kept sleeping.  I wasn't sure if she was 'awake' enough, and then the phone rang a few minutes late, waking her.  She cried so I picked her up, consoling her (she burped 3 times) and then I laid her back down, and she's been sleeping now for 20 minutes.  Uh-Oh, she just woke up.  Poop. I'll try again next nap :-\
