Jelly!!! Need advise
« on: January 16, 2007, 16:11:14 pm »
My little man Mikey is obsessed with jelly! he is becomming such a fan after trying it at a friends birthday party that he wont eat anything else eg.

Me: what would you like for breakfast?
Mikey: Jelly please
Me: you cant have jelly for breakfast, you can have some later if you eat some cereal or toast
Mikey: NO WANT JELLY <enter a stomp of the feet and a high pitched scream>

HELP!!!! All he will eat all day long for breakfast, lunch and dinner is blackcurrant jelly! Ive tried not buying it but then he still refuses to eat and will go all day so starving him until he gives in isnt an option... am i supposed to let him eat it until he gets bored? hes been obsessed for 9days now i thought he'd be bored by now :(

TIA

xx

LOL...sorry, I know it's bugging you, but it's really CUTE and hilarious!!!
So, does he want to eat it by the spoonfull, or actually *on* things?

Could you try the no-sugar added kind, like "All Fruit" or, maybe making some of your own without sugar (in all your spare time...) ;)

What if you gave it to him with other, nutritious stuff, like on a whole wheat pancake or waffle, or a slice of whole wheat toast with some cream cheese for protien?

Overall, I'd say don't make a big issue out of it, as he'll just want to defy even more...I'd try to make the most of it, and think he'll get sick of it soon enough!

:)

Well i tried hiding stuff under it but he wants it in the pretty colour bowls as he calls them that they used at the party so i cant hide anything and if i do he eats around it  ::) he eats just the jelly and i can just about convince him to have some squirty cream and fruit on it.. sometimes! so for dinner tonight he gets another yummy jelly! Ive been buying the sugar free kind so i dont have him bouncing off the walls but im scared his insides are turning purple like his tongue  :-\

Im gonna take a photo of him with his dinner lol

That's hilarious.

How gross too, can you imagine eating spoonfulls of jelly for every meal?? So funny.

Just let him do it, he's bound to get discusted by it sooner or later! Now he probably feels like he's getting away with something ;)

I remember Helen (Ennypen) talked about her "milk jelly" recipe before, obviously adding milk, maybe other healthy stuff in there to get in extra calories etc. You may want to ask her. I am sure it will pass soon enough if you don't get in a power struggle with him about it.

Jelly like Jello, right?  Not jelly like peanut butter and jelly sandwiches... :P

I know it's frustrating, Katy, but I have to say your post made me lol! ;D  And my thoughts are that he'll probably get sick of it pretty soon (assuming he doesn't get sick from it first :-\)  Can you convince him to eat something else more nutritious first, and then the jelly?  Maybe that would work.  Or a small bite of jelly, and then some "real" food, and then another bite of jelly, etc.?

Lexi went through a phase where she ate nothing but bread and butter, with cinnamon and sugar sprinkled on it for every meal.  This went on for at least a month.  I managed to get some nutrition in here and there, but for a long time that was all she ever asked for.  And she's still alive ;)

Good luck!
Allison

Ive tried asking him what he would like, he has chosen his own meals for a long time, he gets an option of about 3 meals and he used to only choose one of them... now i ask him do you want this this or this and he will say 'no jelly!' so that doesnt work lol. And yes i mean jelly aka jello, not jam lol... even i wouldnt give him a huge bowl of jam lol. I tried explaining if he eats a few crackers with cheese then he can have his jelly and he will say ok then and i make it and he throws it back at me screaming for jelly. We went out the other day and i took him into kfc (i know not overly healthy but better than jelly) and he sat and watched Jackson eating his favourite popcorn chicken and he still moaned for jelly and refused to eat any of his food we bought!

OMG, this is funny. I thought you meant jelly like JAM! Not jello! Funny....I suppose jello is better by the spoonful than jam...I was wondering why on earth anyone would feed a 2 year old a bowl of jam!!! But reserving judgement, of course.
How funny!!! :)

Can you put some sliced banannas in there or something - have him help you make it with the fruit in there, maybe give him a little plastic knife to help slice the banannas? Just a thought...

well yesterday i got away with putting mandarin segments in the bottom and banana slices on the top, but still it cant be good for him. Im attempting cheese sandwiches right now, he hasnt yet kicked up a fuss so im hoping he's forgotten that jelly even exists  ::) hes eaten one quarter of a sandwich so far and seems to be losing interest again... but one quarter is better than nothing right

Not for you Im sure!! Im sure he'll be bored soon, I cant believe jelly fills his tum, its like a drink to me!! He sound so adorable, cannot wait to meet him!!  :)

Our LO is much younger than yours - she's only 19 months, but she absolutely ADORES jelly, although we have never had the obsession that you are talking about - maybe only 5 or 6 days in total where all she would eat is jelly.

What I do, when I think we are getting in a  jelly rut, is to just not buy or make any more and then show DD that there is none in the cupboards and none in the fridge. Once she is satisfied that there is none, she will eat something else (even if only fromage frais). Actually, she hasn't had any jelly since Christmas, so we've not had that issue for a while.

I know you said he would starve himself if he didn't have any jelly, but maybe you should set yourself a target date for 'jelly removal operation' and deplete stocks and show your DS that they are going down and that once it is gone he can have any of the other yummy things you have to eat instead - I don't know whether or not that would work, but I am reckoning that DD's cousin (who is 3 and a half) would probably buy it....

Thanks thats actually a good idea, i tried just stopping cold turkey and showing him there was none left but then he would ask to go down to the shops to get some... i cant lie and say its shut b/c we have full view of our shops from all of our windows  ::) I swear the world is against me lol. I finally managed to get him to finish his sandwich though so maybe i can get him out of it... i mean it has been weeks now!

I guess that's the thing with nearly 3 year olds - they are VERY smart and know that you can go to the shops!! LOL

Well done on eating the sandwich, Mikey - good job!

And, I'm sure, a relieved mummy! Sounds like he might be forcing himself to eat other things... I guess you will just have to wait and see.

Good job Mikey, eating the sandwich! :D

Hey Katy, one more thought...

If the cheese sandwich doesn't do the trick for breaking the jelly habit and he goes back to demanding it for every meal, my suggestion would be to pick a plan and be prepared to stick with it through screaming and tantrums.  Once he figures out that mum isn't going to give in to his demands, he'll probably give up, and then at some point you can reintroduce jelly as a treat/dessert/whatever.

Just a thought...but maybe he's getting tired of it anyway.

yea!!! good boy!

Sounds like he just needed to win.  ::)

If you offer it as dessert after dinner maybe 2x week, maybe it won't seem so forbidden either. ???
