Nightmares
« on: January 18, 2007, 15:49:41 pm »
Hi Girls

Last night was the worst night we have EVER had with Madison.  She woke up screaming at around midnight & only stopped crying around 3a.m.  She only napped the rest of the night waking us up bout every half hour or so.  She stayed the night in our bed, refusing to go in her cot.  This is unusual for her.  She has never spent a full night in our bed coz she doesn't like to.

Any tips on what to do when they wake after a nightmare?  How do you deal with it?

I'm so tired :( :(

Niki

P.s we had quite a storm last night which didn't help matters

Owen is having the same problem at the mo so we have given him a special bear that keeps bad dreams away and we made a dream catcher together and have put it above his bed.

He had a dream that his brother fell down the plug hole the other night, he was so upset bless him.

Good luck  ;)

It helps us if we remind her of the difference between real and imaginary during the day.  Makes it easier to reassure her that this can't happen if the thought wakes her up at night.

Are your kids having nightmares that they remember the next day or night terrors that they have no recollection of?

Even Nathan came into my bed last night, the weather was horrendous.

I have my bible with me (the babywhisperer solves all your problems') and this is Tracy's advice::
Comfort and reassure your child, and encourage him to talk about the dream if he rememners the specifics.  Don't minimize his fears the dream is very real to him.  Soothe him with lots of cuddles, even lie with him for a while, but don't take him into your bed.
To prevent future episodes, figure out what might be stressful or fear inducing and avoid daytime encounters with it.  Stick to your regular bedtimes and wind-down rituals.  If your child is afraid of 'monsters' give him a night-light and check under the bed.

Nathan is scared of burglars (after an aquaintance decided to tell me the whole scary burgular story in front of him, even after I asked her to be careful what she said, and could she tell me later, I knew that it would scare him)  So, every night, at bedtime, he comes with me to lock all the doors and check the windows.  It is good for our security anyway as I am her alone during the week, but Nathan has to do it for his own peace of mind.

Niki, I hope that your LO was scared by the awful weather last night and hopefully it is temporary.

Thanks for the advice girls :) :)

TBH I didn't even think to look in BW solves all your probs book ::) ::) ::) ::)

Thanks Mari.  Accidental parenting rears its ugly head lol. ;) ;)

Madison slept quite well last night with alot of lights on.  We are going to buy her a lamp today.  She can pick it out so I'll make a big deal out of it.

I paid alot more attention to the cartoons she watched yesterday as well.  She was saying "dark & spooky" alot which is from Little Einsteins on playhouse disney so I think we'll stick with Cbeebies for a while.

Cbeebies is lovely, I don't think that there is anything scary there, although I remember Nathan being terrified when Pippin got lost on the Rubbish Tip!!!!
