Night lights / afraid of the dark ?????
« on: January 19, 2007, 18:41:11 pm »
Just wanted to ask a question....

.... I am having some awful night wakings with Calum, he is waking up screaming and when I go to him - he tries to push me away and it's like he is sitting up sleep swaying  ::)  and refuses to let me leave him.

I have been trying gradual removal and I have seen some positive results, but I am now starting to thing he may be frightened of the dark.

I have been noticing over the past week that he will go to sleep no problem at bedtime if his door is open a crack, as soon as I close it (when he is sleeping) all hell breaks loose and he screams.

Last night I left a night light outside his room and the door open a crack, he woke in the middle of the night cried out once and promptly fell asleep again.  ;D ;D ;D

Now it could be coincidence or it could be he prefers a little light in his room.

What do you think?  :-\

Definitely leave the light on.  It can't hurt.

Good luck tonight!

Ds has got a cot toy that is a projected show onto the ceiling, birds going around. He knows exactly where it is in the cot. He'll wake up in the night, get upset, but as long as he can bang that button, and have a little light in his room, he settles down again.

I think it's pretty normal, I'm not sure he's exactly scared of the dark, more likely he's disorientated and unsure where he is. Can you get one of those little plug-in night lights, or a very soft light for his room? I'm paraniod about leaving doors open at night b/c of the increased risk of injury if there was a fire, so it'd be better if it was in his room.
Caroline :)

Caroline we have a winiie the pooh light show, Calum thumps his to switch his on at bedtime. I switch it off when he is sleeping because it is accompanied with the Winnie the pooh tune (quite loud  ::)), when it has ever gone of during the night it wakes us up as well.

I will see how the night light in the hall goes, and if successfull I will put it in his room.

Lauren, I think that pp's have great advice with the nightlight, but also, take a look around the bedroom and just have a think about what's there that might scare him.  I found a twig type ornament that Alex pointed to one night, I think it freaked her out. Moved it and she was much better.  I also have to leave the door open, she likes to hear us moving around.  I also moved her bed so that she could see the door.  TBH, I made all these changes and gradually with WIWO she became a better sleeper and I don't know if anything really made a difference, but I'm not changing one of them back!!
