growth spurt?
« on: January 21, 2007, 21:23:26 pm »
Okay I need some more help here. My DD is almost 3.5 months and seems to be going through a growthspurt for the last 3 weeks!  She usually is Easy but since she seems to have started this growth spurt she's eating about every 2 hours but sometimes 1.5-2 hrs.  She used to sleep from 7 pm-5am when I'd give her a quick DF (sort of, she was awake but would quickly go back to sleep) now she's waking at 1 and 5.  Last night she woke up to eat every 2 hours from 4 pm to 5 am!  it was crazy and I'm crazy tired.  She's got some reflux so I'm afraid that makes this worse.  I really need some help. I just don't know what to do, I really don't feel like I can keep going on like this.  any ideas?

It's probably not a growthspurt as they normally don't last that long.  Think back to three weeks ago. What was going on?  Did she have a cold, holiday travel...??? Maybe the growth spurt turned into habit.  What is your normal sch?  Are you on easy?  Could she be getting her first tooth?

Growth spurts don't really last that long. Are you sure she's hungry that often in the day? Could her fussing or crying be from being overtired or anything? List your full day routine, it might help. What is her weight gain like? Proper # of wet diapers? Latching well? Do you pump? Is your lo strictly bf (no formula, no solids)? Do you feed both sides?

At that age my dd always woke at 1 and 4:30 for a feed, it's normal for bf babies to still have night feeds. From what I remember, she had a gs at 3 months and fed non-stop through the night, perhaps your dd is now starting a gs causing the nws last night. Without knowing all the answers to the above questions another posibility is that your lo is feeding so frequently that she's not getting to the hind milk (the fatty good stuff) so she's getting hungrier quicker as she's becoming a snacker.

I posted at the same time as the PP. Apologies for any repetition.

Is that every 2 hours day and night? Or do you feel her appetite is less in the day - i.e could she be 'reverse cycling'? (swapping day for night)

Are you still getting around 6 wet nappies in 24 hours?
Does she seem 'satisfied' at the end of feed (even if it's not for as long as you like)?

If you are currently single-side feeding - could she be ready for double-sided feeding? (Tracy anticipates single-sided feeders will often make a switch eventually).

I think the tooth is a possibility. It might be she's waking and when she's awake she's deciding boob seems a good idea. Have you ever tried to settle her without a feed?

Have you spoken to your doctor about the reflux?

Sorry - lots of questions!

I wish I could say we have a set schedule about feeding but really I just kind of let her lead the way.  but this is how it mostly goes.
7-8 wake and eat
9 sleep
10-11 wake and eat
12 sleep
2 wake eat
3 sleep
5 wake, eat
6 cat nap
7 wake eat bed time routine
4:30-5:30 eat back to bed till 7 am or so

I'm really struggling with cluster feeding, I'm not sure if I'm doing it often enough.  She only feeds on one side and has for about a month and a half, she seemed to be getting too much foremilk and was puking shortly after feedings.    She's a quick and efficient nurser only about 10 minutes.  She has plenty of wet diapers a day. I pump and BF.  I work a couple nights a week and prefer she only have BM.  so she's never had formula and no solids yet.
I really can't think of anything that happened 3 weeks ago to throw her off.
As far as the reflux goes she's on Zantac.
She's eating every two hours during the day and then also last night.
I've checked for teething but don't see/feel anything yet.  she's gotten very spitty lately though.  and she's chewing/sucking on anything she can get to her mouth. so maybe.
thanks for all your help, hopefully I answered all your questions.

Your routine looks good- 4 naps and 6 feeds. Are you counting the time between feeds from the start of one feed to the start of the next feed (or from the end of one to the start of the next)? From your routine posted she's going 3-4 hours between feeds.

As for the foremilk perhaps pump a bit off before putting her on so she gets less foremilk and more hindmilk. In addition I would also perhaps start her on both sides to see if this will fill her better. Around this age I had to start feeding dd on both sides at each feed.

I would also start a dream feed around 10pm, I found this really helped my dd. It will be hard for you to add a cluster feed as she has the nap at 6pm.

I count time from the beginning of one feed to the beginning of the next.  I fed her from both sides all day today and she seemed to spit up more than usual.  I'm not sure if it's from too much milk in her tummy or if it's the cold she's got she's come down with the past two days.  Too much snot can make a tummy upset.
I did a dream feed lastnight and she slept pretty well, but tonight she refused to go to sleep, or rather stay asleep!   So she ate again at 9:30. and has stayed asleep so far.  She seemed to be happier today eating more but she's just a happy baby to begin with...

When my dd was younger and had a cold I fed her on demand as it seemed to make her feel better, then went back on EASY afterwards. I would continue the df for now, it may take a while for her system to get used to the extra feed and require less in the night, not to mention it very well could be the cold that would wake her up.

I may be reading your schedule wrong, but it looks like she's only awake for 1 hour which is pretty short for 3.5 months.  Too short A time can cause night wakings, etc. too.  Just a thought.

Why don't you have a read through of everyone else's posted EASY schedules and see what others are doing at this age?

Yeah, I'm having a hard time doing any sort of schedule right now, she's sick so that's throwing everything off.   She's having a hard time staying asleep as she coughs and wakes herself I used to be able to just give her the paci and she'd drift off again but now she's insisting on a full feed.  I'll keep trying to get her to stay up for about an hour and a half and see how that goes. I'm also trying to get in the dream feeds but she likes to wake up first and demand the feed...I'll probably be able to get it done tonight.

Being sick really does throw things off.  There is a thread about getting back on track. I would try your best to stay with a sch but do what has to be done to get through the sickness.  Try to not adopt any serious AP :)

Can you post what you have been doing?  Take it easy (no pun intended) I know a sick babe isn't easy to deal with.

I've been trying my best do not AP.  I started feeding her from both sides and now she acts ravenous after the first side wanting the second.  She's already expecting that second side.  She seems to be feeling better, her voice isn't so hoarse.  It was so sad sounding for a while... Today she was crazy eating every 2 hours or so, but has now been in bed for a while and seems to be okay.  I'll do a dream feed here in a few minutes and hope she'll sleep through the night again like she has for the last two nights.  I seriously hope I'm not jinxing myself by even typing this.
