6 month old needs a change in routine?
« on: January 22, 2007, 04:30:33 am »
We have been having a hard time with naps for the last couple of days...I'm not sure what is going on.  He won't go down for the 1:00pm nap, and ends up crashing about 3pm - then pushes off his feeding until 4pm or so.

Last time this "nap problem" happened, my LO needed longer A times and a change to 4 hour easy.  I'm hoping someone can look at our routine and give me some advice.

We started solids about two weeks ago, and he's working on sitting up on his own.  He's always napped for 45 minutes to an hour.  I've lived with it because he's slept for 12 hours straight through at night.

A typical day looks something like this...

E:7:30 BF
S:10:00-11:00

E:11:30 BF
naps in car while running errands/shopping.  If I'm at home, sleeps around 1:00.
E:3:30 BF

had refused a nap at 4:00 for about a month - I gave up on trying to put him down for this one.

solids at 5:30/6:00
E: 7:30 BF
S: 8:00pm -8:00am

Any input would be greatly appreciated ;D

It looks like he has 2.5 hours of A time from waking to first nap and only 2 hrs between naps. This seems unusual as most babies can stay awake longer as the day goes on. 2.5 hours to first nap is pretty typical for his age- I would keep that first nap the same time but stretch the pm nap out- perhaps try 1.3- or even 2, depending on his cues and how he usually handles longer A times. I know if I put dd down for a nap too early she protests so much that ends up staying awake for too long and gets overtired so sounds like this is what's happening with you

ok ladies...please help me here.  Things have gotten worse over the past week.

First the good news: he is still napping for approx. 2 hours during the day, and getting him down for naps has improved because I've been staying home in the afternoon.  I've also been working on a really good and long wind down so he can easily go to sleep.

Now the not-so-good news: he has started waking during the night again.  For the past three nights, I've put him down at the usual time of 8pm or so and about an hour to hour and a half later, he wakes up and wants to be topped up.  He seems to not take enough at the last feed before bed and realizes it a little while later ???  Last night he was so wide awake at 9:30pm it took me an hour to get him to go back to sleep!  The night before last he not only woke up at 9pm, but also at 4am!

Help!  The sleep deprivation is killing me.

I think his awake time before bed is to long and you may want to bring forward to 7pm instead. How long is his afternoon nap? At this age if their is no cat nap you need to aim for 2x1.5-2hr naps. This was our routine at this age:
7am - Wake bottle
8am - Solids
9.30am - Sleep 2hrs
12pm - Solids
1pm - Bottle
2pm - Sleep 1.5hrs
4.30/5pm - Solids
6pm - Bath
6.30pm - Bottle
7pm - Bed for the night

I agree with Natasha, his awake time before bed could be too long and this is causing him to be overtired.

You also said that he is learning to sit up on his own - developmental milestones can wreak havoc on naps and night time sleep, as they are constantly wanting to practice what they are learning, and it ends up waking them up in the night.  Hugs things will imporve.

I tried again today to get him to take a nap later in the day.  We struggled for over an hour before I just gave up.  It is 7pm now, and he hasn't slept since 1:30pm.

I tried feeding him solids earlier in the day yesterday and we had no problems getting him down for the night.  I'm wondering if the solids later in the day are interfering with the before bed feed?

I'm going to try shifting his awake time to 2 1/2 hours over the next week or so and see if it makes a difference to the length of his naps.

I also have a question about BF and solids - hopefully you (Natasha) can help.  If you give him a bottle at 7 lets say, does he take 1/2 hour to finish it?  Then you give him solids only 1/2 later?  Then at 12 you give him solids before the bottle?  I don't understand the timing ???

Ok you can try 1hr after feed starts for Solids and see if he wil take it if not then wait an hour after finishing bottle. Sorry at this age my DD was only having 3 bottles so you could try:
7am - Wake bf
8/8.30am - Solids
9.30am - Sleep 2hrs
11am - BF
12/12.30pm - Solids
2pm - Sleep 1.5hrs
3.30pm - BF
4.30/5pm - Solids
6pm - Bath
6.30pm - BF
7pm - Bed for the night
