13mo LO will not stay in nursery at church. any ideas?
« on: January 22, 2007, 22:04:44 pm »
Hi!
My 13mo LO will not stay in the nursery at church. There are two days a week where in an ideal situation he would stay in the nursery for 1-2 hours.

We have tried it all... short goodbyes, long goodbyes, no goodbyes, playing with him then leaving...

I didn't ever try to put him in the nursery until he was about 8mo. - maybe I waited too long? He will stay for 2-10 minutes and then screams for us. He gets so hysterical and I have not let him cry in there because he never cries it out at home and I honestly don't think that he would ever calm down if we did not go in there.

We have a lot of family nearby, so they are the ones to babysit him if we ever go out.

Any ideas as to what to do? I am at a loss!

xoxo.

Have you ever tried staying in there with him for the entire time?  If you did that, then maybe you could try leaving in the middle of the hour or so and coming back really quickly so he gets used to the idea of you leaving, but coming back.  You could then stretch the time slowly - might take awhile, but it would be a very gentle way of leaving him.

I would tell him good-bye -- much like you do when dealing with separation anxiety at home -- or not actually good-bye, but something like, "Mommy needs to go get some water (or something like that), Mommy will be right back" and then disappear for a very short period of time and come back.  If he makes it through that ok, then work on lengthening the amount of time you're gone.  I would talk about it beforehand too, at 13 months he's understanding a whole lot, even if he isn't saying much at this point.
