Eggplant Allergy
« on: January 23, 2007, 22:50:35 pm »
Has anyone heard of an eggplant allergy?  DD2 has been eating eggplant for ages (one of her absolute favorites) but the last 3 times she has eaten it, she developed a rash around her mouth.

Anything else I should keep an eye out for (related to eggplant?)

TIA

Actually, eggplant allergy is not all that uncommon (same goes for mango, FYI). Any other symptoms or just rash around the mouth? If only the rash and if it goes away quickly I might still give it but just not too often and keep an eye on things. However, I believe eggplant is a member of the nightshade family - which also includes peppers, tomatoes and potatoes. Does she react to any of those as well?

Marissa's mum just covered it - allergy to the nightshade family is pretty common. Poor Jalyn  :-*

It's just a rash around her mouth, almost just where the eggplant touches.  She hasn't reacted to potatoes, doesn't like tomatoes, hasn't had many peppers.

That's sad, she LOVES eggplant  :'(

If it's only the rash, what about leaving it for a month and trying again?

I had to check this out because for years, I've wondered if I have an eggplant allergy! Every time I eat it, my mouth and throat ITCH like crazy and feel "sandy" for about 10 mins and then it goes away. WOW, now I know that it's common! Funny....
I think I'll hold off on giving to DS for a LONG time...no need for him to get that on top of all his other little issues right now. :)
