diaper changing after a nap - why is my lo freaking out??

we have a new development.....after waking my 12 wk old bf ds from a nap (when it is time to get up), he sometimes freaks out if i change his diaper before bf. this is happening much more frequently. usually, i pretty much feed him immediately after waking him up. when we diaper change after bf, he loves to play during a diaper change.  lately, i've noticed his diaper gets very, very full and needs to be changed (we also went up a diaper size). i just don't want him hanging out in a dirty diaper that long since he goes all night w/o a change.  it is really weird behavior, he can wake up happy and then as soon as i lay him on his changing table he starts cyring and gets mad. i thought maybe he's starving but i really doubt it...he can usually handle some activity time before breastfeeding just not a diaper change! this could all change by next week but i just think its crazy!  what do you think?  (he also freaks out if i try to change it during the night but that's another issue.)

Could it be that he is still a bit sleepy, and he gets mad because he is not quite awake yet?

I remember my Lo was the same in the beginning--I always waited til after the bfeed as he usually did something anyway in there while he was feeding....

As for night time...can't believe no one told me this earlier, but when he was about 3 mo old a mom asked me, "why do you change him at night?" really they usually don't need to be changed at night, they can last til morning (even though sometimes it seems to weigh 30 lbs in the am!) But if he's got a problem with poo or something then I change him at night...

that's a thought, maybe he is not fully awake yet. guess i wouldn't want my diaper changed either!  yesterday i tried a couple of times and its almost funny b/c as soon as his head hits the changing table he starts to whine.its just always full when he wakes up. He always goes again during bf so i won't worry about it for now. i was concerned b/c i just don't want him to expect to be fed immediately when he wakes up every single time?? 

why doesn't anyone tell new moms not to worry about the night time diaper??? thankfully i read bw and stopped doing that a long time ago.

I would not worry, at this age it is ok to feed them as soon as they wake up.  He will let you know when he is not ready to eat straight after waking up.

I know, we would be changing our lo's diaper every 3 hours in the night time too.  Me too

yep feel like such a dork cause I rememeber doing it in hospital when I was half-asleep and soo exhausted anyway... (as if it could've even been that full then...)
