What am I missing?
« on: January 24, 2007, 13:36:39 pm »
Ok, we've been doing pretty well with no unexplained nightwakings for a while.  If we had them I knew it was because DS was sick or teething etc.

But, the past 2 nights DS has been up 2 times each night (takes 25-60+ mins to get him back to sleep) and I can't figure out why.

He wakes up absolutely screaming like mad.  I pick him up to try to assess what's wrong and he stops immediately.

I don't think he is in pain or he wouldn't stop screaming immediately.  (I did give Motrin at the first waking last night because he wouldn't calm down and he still woke a second time so I really don't think it was pain or the Motrin would have prevented the second waking).

He isn't sick right now (as far as I know).

This isn't his typical overtired waking.

He doesn't have any props.

He is going through SA during the day...fussy a lot of the time and not playing alone like he used to do  :'(.  If it was SA at night though wouldn't he calm down once he saw me or dh?

What am I missing?  Night wakings are bad enough when you know what's causing them, but I hate not knowing why and therefore not being able to work toward getting rid of them.

Thanks for any thoughts.

He only has the 2 bottom teeth  - LOL!  ::)

Yes, he is working on one of the top teeth, but it really doesn't strike me as pain.  My guess is more the separation anxiety, but how do you deal with that in the middle of the night?

Ok...after 2 more wakings last night, I can finally see on his gums this morning that it is teeth  ::)  I guess the Motrin just isn't strong enough this time  :-\

Thanks for your thoughts Jessica.

Ya, but these are just the top front teeth...we're going to be in BIG trouble for the molars!!  My DD's were never this bad.  :'(

Although he is teething, he is still not acting like he is in pain during the night (and is in a good mood during the day) so I don't think these are teething wakings.  We are on night 5 of twice a night, 30+ minutes of pd each time.

Could it be SA?  If so, do we just keep doing pd?  He had been sleeping through the night and does put himself to sleep.  If it is SA how do we handle it?

Thanks!

I suppose it could be SA - does he show any signs during the day, like being more clingy? A lot of people deal with it at night be either sleeping on the floor in LO's room, or you can sit on a chair next to the crib and gradually, day by day move the chair further away until you're out of the room. Also play a lot of peekaboo so that he can learn object permanence.
