Encouraging independent play
« on: January 25, 2007, 16:29:39 pm »
Just looking for a few suggestions on how I might go about encouraging my toddler to play independently (even for 10 seconds). I'm sure much of it has to do with some amount of accidental parenting and some about her temperament, but I'd like to work on it a little. Any thoughts you might have would be greatly appreciated.

Play with your toddler, but next to her rather than with her on your lap.  Try not to play with the same toys as she is, play with something else, if she comes to play with it, move over to something else.
If she wants to be in the kitchen when you are trying to prepare food, empty a cupboard and put things in there that she can play with, ie, tins of beans, saucepans, spoons etc.

If I think of anything else I will post.

Here's a link to a similar post with some ideas and some info on separation anxiety (it actually has links to a few other similar posts).  HTH :)
