6 hour timechange with 10 month old
« on: January 28, 2007, 01:24:39 am »
i'm taking my then 10month old lo on vacation, 6 timezones away. we've done this before, but then he was quite a bit younger and things just kinda fell into place. this time my dh won't be there with us, and i feel like i need a battleplan.
i guess i'm looking for advice on what to do when i put ryan to bed there (we'll be 6 hours AHEAD over there) and he wakes up after an hour and a half because he thinks it was a nap, but it wasn't. should i get him up and play a bit more, or should i keep things low key and try and get him to go back to sleep (be persistant) ? if i get him up for more playtime, will he stop waking up after a few days and he'll be adjusted?
our routine for naps is quite a bit different from bedtime, so he really shouldn't have any problems realizing "o, this is bedtime for good" (i guess it'll also be dark outside), but if he's just not tired?
i also know to, after maybe a day or so, wake him up in the mornings when he would normally get up. and then stick to the same routine as at home.
i guess the big overall question is: to what extent should i be persistent at bedtime, and what can i realistically expect from a ten month old in terms of a timeframe for getting adjusted?  ???
i'd appreciate any input on this, please!!!!
btw, i'll be quite upset over there when i don't have access to babywhisperer (aka my livingroom full of smart friends). bw is quite addictive!!!  ;)

I'm going to be dealing with the same thing when I go to Hawaii in June.  How long are you going to be gone for?  If you're going to be gone for less than a wk, you might not want to change things up too much.  KWIM?

We went to Hawaii (from Arizona, 3 hour difference) in December with our 9.5 month old.  He did really well.  I agree with pp that if you are not going to be gone for that long then it is not worth a big huge hassle.  I think that you just let the first day go however and then try to start the second day on time.  It may mean that he may not get a lot of sleep that first night and he might need to take an extra nap or just take longer naps that second day.  I found that my lo was much more adaptable then I gave him credit for.  The only problems we had after the trip were related to sleep because we rocked him to sleep the entire time we were on vacation because of the situation we were in.  Even that only took about 1 week of persistence to get back on track.

HTH,
Kimberly

Then you definitely want to get him changed over to the new time.  I would try to do meals and naps/nighttime at the correct time according to the new time zone.  He will have some trouble at first but it shouldn't take too long for him to change over.  Then you'll get about 2.5 weeks of fun and then come home and try to switch him back to his 'normal' schedule.   ;)

There's some good pointers over in the EASY FAQ about this:
