DS won't take milk from sippy cup
« on: January 30, 2007, 16:43:54 pm »
Ok, just switched lo to milk from formula and he refuses to take it out of a sippy cup and will only use the bottle.  I have a very head strong ds, just like dh >:(,  and I am at a loss.  My ds will only drink water from a sippy cup and doesn't like juices either.

I also am pretty clueless on how to give it to him now.  Should I be doing a scheduled "feed" like his bottles were or just let him have some at a time etc and give him a full bottle at night?

this switch from formula and baby food to real food and milk is throwing me!

Help and thank ladies.

When we switched to a sippy cup it was crazy.  DD wouldn't take it period.  She hated it.  Every meal I gave in and gave her the bottle.  After about a month we decided that we needed to be consistant.  We just stopped giving the bottle.  After about 2 weeks of her refusing it she got the picture.  I was freaked out at her fluid intake because it was so little but my doc said to offer milk substitutes...cheese, yogurt, cottage chese and that she would be fine.  If he will take water you can put an once of milk in his water to ease him into it.  Or try a certain sippy for milk and a certain sippy for water.  Hope that helps.  The switch from formula or BMto real food was a tough one for me.  It's just so hard to know....

It took dd awhile before she got up to the recommended 16-24oz per day.  Our ped said just to be patient and keep offering.  If he's drinking water, you'll be ok as you just need to make sure you're getting enough fluids in him.  FWIW, dd has never had juice, not because she wouldn't drink it, but because we don't offer it.  I'd much rather see her drink water or milk.

In the meantime, offer lots of other dairy like the pp said.  Dd was ebf until 12mos, but we offered water and milk in separate sippys as well.  Dd really liked the Nuby soft spout sippys from WalMart.  It's kind of a cross between a sippy and a bottle.  Something like that might help ease the transition from the bottle.

When you offer it during the day is really up to you.  Dd wasn't drinking alot of milk, so we always offered milk when we were at home and water when we were out.  The only thing I found was to cut out milk an hour or two before meals so as not to fill her up.  And technically, you can continue to offer milk in a bottle, but you will have to deal with it eventually.

Hi there! I agree with all the PPs - but wanted to add this:

We have recently tried the First Years straw cups - i think they're called "take and toss" or something. DS guzzles anything I put in there, including milk, even cold. Previously we had the same problem which never really got much better with time.

As far as when to give, I kept with the same bottle schedule, but switched to a cup, and gave the cup in the same chair as I had given the bottle. DS was very used to the cup from having it at meals. That only worked so-so, so I just started offering the cup as a snack after naps with something else - some little crackers, some sliced grapes etc. Eventually it caught on with him, but the straw cup has been the best solution yet!

We have only just recently got our DS to transition in the last few weeks.  It took some time as he was teething at the same time.

We offered him his milk in the same type of cup as his juice / water, but he just was not interested.

We were out in the shops about a week ago and DS was pointing to something so I took him over to the shelf and he picked up a sippy cup - It was a Nuby soft spout, and that evening we put his milk in it and he took it - we then had a few trying days, but today he eventually took a full cup.

I agree if your lo is taking enough water I would not worry too much about milk feeds while transitioning, just keep on offering dairy.

As for when to offer - Our DS was only taking one milk feed at night, so we just switched this one - he refuses any other milk during the day ::)

Good luck with the transition.

Thanks for all the suggestions!  I will give them a try.

So if my ds is taking approx. 20-24 oz of milk/day, should I cut him down?

After the age of 1 they suggest that 16oz is what they need, and that their food is the main source of nutrician.  This does not have to just be milk, it can also include any dairy products like yogurts and cheese.

so, if he is eating good (i think) and still takes that much milk is it best to cut it down to 16oz?

I think if he eats a good amount of dairy then you can cut it back.  My DD only drinks about 10-12 oz a day.  My ped recommended that much...don't know why it's less than what everyone else says???  But she eats dairy with at least 2 meals a day so I think it's fine.

After the age of 1 they do suggest no more than about 16oz, as it can start to interfere with their appetite.

Here is a link on Milk Intake, and what you can expect your lo to take from the Bottle Feeding FAQ's Board.

Dd just turned 2, and our ped actually said they have upped the milk recs, and she should be getting 24oz per day.  So if 20-24oz is not interfering with his appetite, I wouldn't worry about it.  He's only just turned 1yr - he may cut back a bit on his own as he starts eating more solids and more variety.

Thanks everyone.  I called my pediatrician and they said anywhere from 18-24 oz is reccommended.

I hope the new sippy cup helps!

Ok, I went out and bought a Nuby bottle and like an idiot, I threw away the instructions......!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!  How do I get the spout to work? I don't want to ruin it before I even try.

I know, silly I can't figure it out though?

LOL. That's funny. They're hard to work, DS actually does not like them because they're too hard. You have to bite and suck at the same time, and not much comes out. I saw him getting really frustrated with it when I first gave to him, so I tried it and it took me a couple of times to get it to work! :)

I actually cut ours with a knife.  I made the slits in it bigger and DS drinks perfectly out of it now.

I read the instructions and I did not see anything.  DS was getting really frustrated and kept on giving it back to me.  I tried to drink out of it and it was hard, so that is why I decided to cut it.

I don't know why they're considered disposable - i think it's totally wastefull! I have a bunch of the same brand's little bowls with lids that I bought ages ago for Marshall's frozen baby food at daycare ... he still uses them for his snacks! I guess it's the same thing as those ziplok "disposable" plastic containers - they say they're to be tossed, but I really think they're fine to keep - and much cheaper than the "permanent" versions!

The straw cups don't really leak that much - I mean, like I said earlier, don't give him grape juice in it and then send him toddling to the living room, but for the high chair, they're totally fine!

Well, yes and no on the Nuby.  He tried when I first got it (which is huge), but then when he couldn't get anything from it he stopped trying.  I went ahead and cut the slits bigger, but may have gotten carried away!  I tried again and he didn't like it (as the milk was running down his face ;D).  So, I have another and will try again!

I hope it works!

For a long time when we were first introducing a sippy (~6-8mos or so), the take-n-toss were the only thing she'd drink out of.  I always thought it was because they were cheap enough that if you lost it, it wasn't a big deal.  And there is no valve, so they do leak, but they make it easier for beginners.

I am not sure how to post a pic on here so hope that works, but Nuby has two straw cups, little one with handles and tall one without handles.  My son who HATE HATE HATES drinking out of sippy will take these.  Just thought I would mention it!
