Ds is addicted to Elmo
« on: January 31, 2007, 12:19:51 pm »
I never thought I would let ds watch TV - UNTIL, I found out I was pregnant and had some MS issues - he started watching just a bit every day to give me a chance to rest.  ANYWAY, he is getting over a horrendous virus/ear infections/croup - now and I think we (mostly dh ;)) let him watch a bit too much in an effort to keep him calm and help him heal.

He is addicted to Elmo.  When I went in to wake him this morning, the first word out of his mouth was Elmo.  He throws "Elmo Tantrums" when I don't let him watch.  Please tell me this is just a phase and if I keep putting my foot down (not letting him watch - esp. when he throws an elmo tantrum) that this, too, will pass.................

We have Balamory tantrums here. At the end of the programme, the characters wave "bye bye" and so do we. I cannot say it works terribly well but at least DS gets a reminder that the TV is going to be switched off

At least it's Sesame Street, and has some educational value!

Can you work Elmo time into your daily routine so that he watches it at the same time each day - like before nap or before bed, and then comes to expect it at that time and no other - that way it's not really open for discussion?

Just a thought. I'm secretly jealous as my 14 month old won't sit still for 5 minutes to watch Sesame Street and I would love it on Saturday and Sunday mornings so I could catch a few extra winks! :)

I honestly think they did studies when they developed Elmo to make him super addictive to toddlers - my dd loves him too...and Cookie Monster, Ernie, Bert, Big Bird, Grover...anyway I think as long as you're consistent he'll get it eventually.  Over the holidays with tons of family in and out I knew dd was watching way more tv than I would like, so we had "TV broken" week -- we just left it off for a week -- she asked a whole lot in the beginning and less and less as they week went on -- forced us to get out more and come up with more things to do.  If you let him watch it, I'd just give warning that it's going to be over and no more for the rest of the day.  Of course there's also an opposing school of thought that says if you let him watch as much as he wants eventually he'll max out on it and watch less of it on his own.
