Straw Sippys
« on: February 01, 2007, 15:25:16 pm »
We are transitioning from bottles to sippy cups and my son is doing okay.  His biggest problem is that he wants to drink out of the sippy in an upright position and he does not lean back enough so all he gets is air.  I figured that a straw sippy might be better but he can't seem to figure out how to use it.  Any suggestions for helping him sip through the straw?  The sippys we are trying have the large, soft straw.  Thanks.

I forgot to mention that he takes forever to drink from the sippy (and the bottle now also).  He will take a sip or two and then remove the sippy/bottle from his mouth and look at it and play with it then put it back in for another sip or two.  It is driving me nuts!  It used to take him about 5 minutes to drink 6oz and now I have to hold him and keep semi-forcing the sippy/bottle back into his mouth.  Suggestions on this issue?

I can't picture what kind of sippy you're using - but maybe the straw is too thick and he can't get a good grop? We use these: http://www.amazon.com/Bob-Builder-Take-Toss-Straw/dp/B000MSKKGY

They're actually really sturdy so I don't consider them disposable, even though theyre advertised that way...The straw is thinner, like a real straw, but not sharp. And the top snaps on really well. They spill, but not too badly - I'd not allow them in the livingroom or anything, but they're good for high chair use.

Hmmm...I went to Wal-Mart and bought one of every type of sippy cup that they had.  One of the ones I got has a smaller straw like the one you have.  I thought that would be harder for him and that was why I was trying the others first.  I will try that one at lunch.  I saw the ones that you have and I didn't get them because they seemed like they were for a child that had mastered the sippy cup.  And my son has a habit of turning his cups upside down and he would make a major mess!   ;D

Kimberly,
We bought a small straw sippy with handles (Nuby brand) that worked well.  Because the cup is small they don't have to suck for so long to get the lquid up and it is therefore easier. hth.
hugs, Tammy
OH, and the Gerber Sip&SMile 7oz ones are great bc the babes don't have to tip them up very much at all to get the liquid out, these are a success in our house!!

We tried the Munchkin brand at lunch, the one that you  can put in the freezer.  I had to help him at first because he could not figure out how to suck on the straw.  I have to say that formula tastes gross!  After that he did well.  He tried shoving all the way in his mouth like he does the bottles and other sippy cups.  He drank a decent amount.  I have another brand that I am going to try at dinner, the Gerber straw sippy.

fwiw, both kids learned how to drink from a straw from watching us - usually at restaurants!  i'm pretty sure that's why they both mastered straws before 'real' sippy cups!   :-[ ;D

Brendan just chews on the straws.  He does the same with the regular sippy spouts and the nipple too sometimes.  I wonder if he got that from me, I have a bad habit of chewing on straws.   :-[

This is how Riley learned as well!
Tink, I bite straws as well, I don't know why but I can't stop myself. It's not even conscious, sometimes after I finish my drink I will notice the straw is chewed up.

p.s. I should mention as I forgot to say this in my original post - don't worry too much about his dawdling with the cup and not drinking much. That's pretty normal. Babies tend to drink significantly less milk at a sitting once they've transitioned to a cup. And that's ok because at that same time, they need less milk too. Once he gets good at it, that slow-ness will go away!

Our DS had the same problem with not being able to tip the sippy cup to drink.  So, I introduced him to the Gerber Sippy straw cup and he loves it.  It took him awhile to get the concept of sucking out of a straw, he chewed on it for awhile.  I just kept offering him the cup and he eventually figured it out.  It's great when we're in a restaurant because he can drink their cups with a straw with no problems.

I have a question. If you lo has mastered the sippy cup is there any reason to introduce them to a straw cup? My dd loves her sippy and is very good at it  and knows to tip it back to get more out. Is the straw more advanced than a sippy? Just wondering next steps for dd

no, you certainly don't HAVE to move to a straw cup.  mine just found that one easier at first.

also, now that the kids are older & we do ask for drinks for them on the occasions we do go out, they come in straw cups.  :)

Doj-I agree with Jaime- The one plus to your kid being able to use a strawis that you can get them a drink when you are out and about and not have to bring your own sippy.

Brendan is liking the smaller straws  much better, thanks MDH Mommy.  I am using the non-spill ones but I did buy a couple of the Take-and-Toss ones from Wal-Mart today.  I have also decided to offer the sippy for a longer period.  With the bottle he got it about an hour after eating and once he was done he was done.  With the sippy I have been offering it with the meal, about an hour later, and then a probably right before his nap.  We'll see how this goes, today is pretty much day 1.

Thanks for all your help!   :-*
