Is He on a growth spurt? Please Help
« on: February 01, 2007, 15:28:11 pm »
My baby is 3.5 months old and he was sleeping trough the night until last week when he had a cold and started waking very hungry at 2 a.m.
When he felt better, he started eating the way he normally does and sleeping a bit longer everyday: 3:00 a.m. one night, then 4:00 and 4:30.
I was hopping last night he would go back to his normal waking time (around 6:00 a.m.) but instead he woke up at 9:00 p.m., (an hour before his dream fed and ate 4.5 ounces), and then at 1:20 a.m. and emptied both breasts…Is he on a growth spurt?? What should I do??

Here is his 3.5 - 4 hour easy routine:
6:20 wake up and fed (both breasts)
6:40 diaper change
At day care:
9:20 fed (4 to 6 ounces)
10:00 nap
12:30 fed (4 to 6 ounces)
2:00 nap
4:30 or 5:00 fed (4 to 6 ounces)
At home:
Play until 6:30
6:30 Bath and bedtime routine
7:00 fed (both breasts)
7:30 bedtime
10:00 dream fed (4 or 5 ounces)

Thank you for your answers

Sure sounds like a growth spurt to me!

You may want to pump more frequently throught the growth spurt to keep building your supply.  Do you nurse on days off?  I would suggest a little more nursing for your supply whenever you can.

Thank you for your answer, I pump only once a day (around 6 ounces) and take the expressed breast milk to day care the next day. On weekends, I breastfeed him as much as I can, and typically he only takes one 6 ounces bottle in the afternoon. I’ll take your advice and use the pump maybe after his night fed. Whish me luck tonight, I’m exhausted!

Growth Spurt is officially over, he's on a four hour EASY now and sleeping though the night again! However he lost some weight after almost a week not eating enough at day care and waking up hungry at night…What I did was take a day off so I could figure out what was going on and after reading some posts at wabywhisperer.com I decided to change teats from size 1 to size 2 and worked like a charm. My son now takes tree 6 ounces feeds at daycare and has started to gain weight again.
