What are you doing when he gets up at night?  When he's up for that long are you trying pu/pd or shh pat?  I would just make sure you are doing nothing to reward the middle of the night wake up.  We certainly don't want him to think this is special mom and me time  ;)

I was going to ask about that today!!  I do pu/pd but it doesn't seem to work very well, he starts crying as soon as I set him down.  Shh pat works better, but I have a bad back, and I can't lean over his crib for that long.  When he's really upset, I will take him out and read to him, but that is probably not the right thing to do.  It seems like if he can see me, I have no hope of getting him to fall asleep.  It was actually funny the other night, my husband likes to play with a laser pointer with baby B (he loves finding it on the wall, roof, floor, etc).  I was very tired and at my wits end, so I finally grabbed the laser pointer, pointed it at the wall, and slowly backed out of the room!  It took about 15 minutes but it worked!!  Of course that was after we had already been up for a couple of hours but now I keep the laser pointer by my bed!  Any other ideas would be appreciated!

If you decided to do pu/pd you have to stick with it.  He may cry right when you put him down.  It's an up and down up and down thing. It is not fun but it will work if you stick with it.  Have you read anything about how to do pu/pd.  And you already know that caving and reading to him will not get you anywhere in the long run  ;)

I have read how to do pu/pd, although maybe I need a refresher!  I loaned my book to my friend and haven't gotten it back yet.  The only times I actually read to him were when he had a cold, and I really felt he just needed some time to sit up, and let the fluid drain out.  I know it's a bad habit, and I try really hard not to take him out of his room.  What about giving him water?  He will only drink from a bottle, not his cup, so would giving him water from a bottle be considered a prop?

Almost anything COULD become a prop.   :-\
Here is a link to pu/pd info since you were so nice and let someone borrow your book!
