Question on weaning
« on: February 12, 2007, 19:40:09 pm »
Bit about ds and me - He is 10 mths today and weighs 26lbs.  We are down to three milk feedings per day.  Two expressed 7 ounce sippys and one direct feed.  I also pump before going to bed for supply sake but don't get anything.  On weekends I do all the feedings and ds is happy with supply.  I pump after each feeding on weekends to up supply but, for some reason, Monday is still my worst supply day of the week and it improves through the week.  I know pumping is not an accurate indicater of supply but I really think ds is satisfied with less from me but drinks whatever is offered to him in a sippy.  He was an over-eater from the bottle which is why we went to sippys (Tracy suggested that this helps with babies that tend to over-eat from the bottle because they can regulate flow better)

The plan is to bf until 11 mths and then slowly introduce whole milk and be finished weaning around his first b-day.

Around what point did you drop down to two feedings per day?  I think we might be at that point but I want to make sure that ds is getting enough milk.

Many babies will drop to 2 feeds around 10 months, so I think it would be fine to start cutting out one feed... as long as the solids are still a good variety and cheese and yogurt are in there too.

When you get rid of an afternoon feed, am I correct in stating that it should be replaced with a snack?

Currently we are doing:
8am sippy
9am yogurt with cereal
1pm solids (veggie) with cereal
2pm sippy
6pm solids (meat entre)
7pm bf
(we normally do some finger foods throughout the day)  I was thinking that I might change the 9am yogurt to a fruit with cereal and do yogurt as an afternoon snack in place of the 2pm sippy.

I would suggest following his lead.  With dd1, we never did snacks... she wasn't a snacker and ate plenty for her meals.  DD2 is a snacker and will have an AM snack and a PM snack and eat good meals  ::)

Your plan sounds good... see how it goes
